procedural Christmas Ball contest

#61
some last minute great entries... thanks folks!
Andreu: mmm, instanced Xmas ball uh... this means I'll have to add it manually since instanced instances don't render ATM. I'll do it just for you... (...kiddin'...)

How did you make this "ribbon" (what is the correct name?) around the tree?
I planned to upload the whole scene once it's finished... but since you asked here you are a little preview ;)

basically I used ToddWR's Pathed Helix script and Particle Spline (with a little help from Hiroto's fur alpha map):
1.create an Helix spline and give it the basic (conic) shape of the tree;
2.call Pathed Helix scipt, drag the Helix onto it and play with its settings;
3.create a little plane and assign an alpha-mapped material (in this example I used a 4-quads mesh to give it a slight curvature);
4.add a particle tag to produce some randomness in rotation and scale;
5.create a Particle Spline and use the "plane" as base mesh and the pathed helix as reference "path";
done.

please see attached files (I embedded Hiroto's fur alpha map in the material, I hope he doesn't mind...)

cheers,
Alessandro

Xmas is still a week away... that's why there's nothing under the tree :smile:
Frank, I think you'd really deserve a new iMac as a present from the Community... :icon_thumbup: so go to your favorite Apple Store, open your "forum gift registry" and let us know ;)

BTW, this year just a little box for me: just ordered Modo 5.01 :rolleyes:

cheers,
Alessandro

P.S.: just kidding... there will be CS5 in my little Xmas box :tongue:

I have my hopes for a robotic vacuum cleaner in that middle one. ;)
