Cheetah3D 7 - Free Upgrade Promo - Mac App Store

Apple spent more than 4 years to explain me that Cheetah3D is just a "niche app" and that Cheetah3D therefore it not good enough to be displayed more prominently in the MAS. Unluckily I never believed that and I was even crazy enough to disagree. Something you should definitely never do!!!

So you can be for sure that my "friends" at Apple won't miss me for a single microsecond.

Apple's obliviousness to the 3D market is pretty much legion. The last time they paid much attention to it was to strongarm developers into supporting QuickDraw 3D and then abandon it, which destroyed most of the Mac 3D developers (only Strata survived, and it only hung on by a thread — by switching to OpenGL as quickly as it could).

My hope is that your voice will be added to those calling for some degree of reasonable reform in the Mac App Store.

I really wouldn't hold my breath on that anymore. I've already sent two feature request bug reports (Dec. 2010 and Jan. 2012) to Apple and they closed them both. There simply is no interest for apps like Cheetah3D. As I already said, Cheetah3D is considered as "niche" software by Apple and Apple has zero interest in niche markets like 3D animation. That's pretty sad but I can't change that. Sorry.

Bye
Martin

What's really depressing is that if you go to the Graphics & Design category in the App Store the front page features ridiculous crap that doesn't even qualify as "niche" software that has no reviews and no ratings.

E.g. imageEncoder — a program for base64 encoding images. That's useful to what? A tiny minority of web developers who would know what to do with it (incidentally, this includes me) who aren't aware of insanely convenient free online tools for doing the same thing (i.e. not me after all). Split Lab — a program for splitting images into mosaic tiles. Who the heck uses this? And who needs a one trick pony tool to do it with?

I have a pretty good idea of the number of people who use C3D just based on assuming it's at least 10x the number of people who bought my book, and C3D is a far bigger deal than 99% of the garbage in the App Store, including 90% of the front page stuff in Graphics & Design.

Yeah but did you see "MakeCheckerboard 2" yet???? It's an app that let's you make 2 color checkerboards of ANY color!!!! No longer will I be stuck just making black and white checkerboards using "MakeCheckerboard 1"....now I can make checkerboards IN ANY COLOR I WANT!!!!
Since downloading it, I've been making thousands of checkerboards in every color of the rainbow. Green and purple ones, red and blue ones, and get this - I even made one that was yellow and orange, and THAT has been my dream ever since home computers were invented.
I'll admit, the learning curve for the app was long and difficult...it took me about 3 weeks before I could even make one square, and even then it was a black one....not full color or anything...
But now 6 months later, I can make any checkerboard I want with any colors I want. I'm not fast yet though...I think in a few more months or maybe another year, I will be able to make checkerboards in less than 3 days, so it's kinda hard to do, but it's more fun making checkerboards than it is to make anything in a 3D program.
Oh and I can make stripes now with this new version too - and with only ONE click! (I don't know which button to push for that, so I haven't actually made stripes yet, but when I find the right button to push, you can bet your ass I am going to make A LOT of stripes!)
Anyway...my family is impressed with the checkerboards I make, and so are my friends.
AND I show all my checkerboards to my dog, and he LOVES them! (wags his tail and everything)
I just wanted to say that not ALL the apps on the "Graphic and Design" category of the Mac store are absolutely 100% garbage, in fact, I am completely convinced that "MakeCheckerboard 2" is going to change the world somehow. I don't know how exactly....but I know it's a very, very important and significant application that many, many people are going to find crucial in their day-to-day lives, not just for their "Graphics and Design" needs, but also just for the simple joy and relaxation of sitting down and making a checkerboard for absolutely no damn reason.
Yep...the world is a far, far better place now that we can make full color checkerboards.

I stick to MAS, my app is in "Graphic and Design" category:redface: , if you search 'fbx', you'll find it.

The sandbox is really annoying, I have to tell the users to copy all textures to the same directory to use them:(

The only reason let me stay there is that I myself prefer to buy apps there, no worry about virus etc. So I guess there must be a lot of people similar to me.

Yeah but did you see "MakeCheckerboard 2" yet???

No I didn't — because I only talked about apps in the top three rows of the front page. There are also multiple screenshot applications for people who don't know how to use command-shift-3 and command-shift-4 (and yet need to make screenshots).

Seriously, I understand that curating the App Store must be a big job, but it's not hard to, say, automatically pick apps that have reviews and users, and maybe flag every app in the store with "looks useful" vs "has no earthly use" during review.

o man... you made me cry (laughing)

Oh it's a hell of an app! I mean, where else can you get an app that is so highly specialized in making checkerboards? I defy anyone to find one other than on the Mac app store!
It's a tough app, I admit it, I mean, just deciding which two colors to use, takes a long time...there's "RGB" colors, and "CMYK" colors...and I only recently found out which one I like better, and that was because I had to search to find out the difference. I won't tell you the difference between the two, because it's important to find your OWN checkerboard colors, and to be honest I really don't want anyone ripping off MY checkerboard color choices, but you'll be happy once you decide which colors you want to use.
And then of course there is the really hard part of deciding how big to make the squares...that takes forever to figure out, that's why you can't just make a checkerboard in one day.
So yeah gille1981...it IS a tough app, but it's a checkerboard makin' son of a bitch, I can tell you that!
AND I found out recently on macrumors.com, that the developer is coming out with "Makecheckeredcube" soon too!
Man...that's just crazy! A checkerboard on ALL 6 sides of a cube????!!!!
WHOAAA!!!! that would take me like a month just to make ONE cube!
And not only that, there might be an option to upgrade the app to make - yes you guessed it - a Rubik's Cube!!!!
Can you imagine that????
I will probably never get to that level, I mean....all those different colors....damn...you don't just jump into a big checkerboard project of any kind with that many colors involved, you know? It's scary to even think about it.
Anyway for now I have my hands full with the regular two color checkerboards, and I am getting some really good feedback, in fact, I showed my mom my latest one last night. She looked at it, and then stared back at me, and then just put her hands in her face and started crying. I could tell that she was really proud of me.

Yeah I'm just messing around here Pod...
But I totally agree with you, which is why I illustrated the sheer idiocy of one of the apps on the front page (Makecheckerboards 2) in a way that demonstrates how freaking stupid that app is, and why it has absolutely no intrinsic value on the app store. I agree that curating the store would be a big job, but that's no excuse for Apple to concede to lowbrow app sales and downright stupidity. Hire more people to get the job done, point blank. I swear everywhere I look, quality standards are falling on everything.
Btw...I bought your book on iTunes and I think it's great. I left a review there as well, and I kinda pissed on a few of the negative reviewers. They deserved it, they were assholes. Just thought you might like to know...

Yeah I'm just messing around here Pod...

Oh I appreciate your comment. I'm just saying I found two ridiculous examples before I even got to your — hilariously awesome — example, thus missing comedy gold :)

It's absolutely ridiculous that C3D was "too niche" to get featured (or at least on the front page) when such ridiculous crap routinely makes it there. (Heck the checkerboard program looks like something someone created while learning to program.)

Mmmh - you´re registered to the forum since 2009. Cheetah3d arrived in the MAS on 6th Jan. 2011. Are you saying you waited with buying a license till then?

Cheers
Frank

Actually, I did. In 2009 I was asking questions about how Cheetah3D compared to Blender. I didn't actually buy a license until after it became available on the Mac App Store, and I've bought nearly all of my software on the MAS since.

what was the most difficult feature to implement? of the new features I mean

Also why re write the renderer?

Hi, been a while. I have been using Cheetah for my 3D prototyping for years now. For me it is shame that Cheetah3D has to be off the App Store. As a user I like it but I understand developers have to (try) stand against Apple's tyranny :D

I like the idea of Sandboxes. Could not opening an non JAS format just do import and bring the referenced stuff to Cheetah3D sandbox. I might miss the point but it's ok ;)

Recently all my tools are running in sandboxes already and I export between them. I hate to have references that I am not sure I know where they are.

Anyway, I think I still have 2 Cheetah3d licenses. One prior to App Store migration and the one after. I guess I might upgrade the old license. Or any discount for upgrading both? :)

Edit: I have been telling everyone about Cheetah as the "Powerful Paint Tool for 3D, easy and fun to use". It might not be fair to Cheetah3D, I am no specialist in 3D art. I just know that I get a headache if I open Blender or pretty much any other 3D tool I have ever tried.

I hope you keep it that way and find your market Martin! There should be people interested in an easy yet powerful modelling tool...

Thanks, and bye :)

I know this is kind of off topic because these are feature requests and I am sure it's far too late for any of these to be added to v.7, but I was wondering if a few options could be added to a later version of Cheetah OR if there is something I am missing and some (if not all) of these requests are possible in the current version. (being a beginner I am not sure if I am using Cheetah correctly)

1. I would like the "Style" functions to be able to be assigned in "Preferences..."
Specifically "Grid" and "Orbit Selected". I almost always turn off the grid, and almost always turn on Orbit selected when I work, so it would be great to set them that way so that all newly created files already have them the way I want.

2. I would like the Camera Resolution also to be assigned in "Preferences..."
The default (640 x 480) is just too small for me, especially in the render manager window, which leads me to number 3...

3. I would like the render manager window to show a larger preview, with options for image size depicted in the window. Currently it seems like the preview is at about 25% of actual size...it would be great to get that to 50% so that I could check details of a render before saving the file and then having to open it up as a jpeg or whatever just to check to see if it was a good render. Maybe a "zoom render preview" function?

Again, I don't know if I am using the program correctly, so maybe some or all of these things can be done and I just haven't learned how to do it? Not sure, so I thought I'd ask...

1. Not sure what "Orbit Selected" is but you can assign 100% transparent colors to the grid so it will become invisible.
2. +3. The default render size (640x480px) will be displayed 1:1 in the render manager. You can drag out (bottom right corner - like every MacOSX window) the window till your render won´t be scaled anymore or maximize will work/makes sense until your resolution isn´t bigger than your display resolution. Additional infos about Renderer/Image;Animation/Time/Quality/Resolution/Frame/Date/File-Name will appear with the v7 update.

Cheers
Frank

I agree with all three requests. Especially number 3. Yes, you can enlarge the render manager window as Frank suggests, but nearly all my work has a size greater than the resolution of my screen (2560x1600). We need to be able to view at 100%, and be able to pan around in the render manager.
I requested this before, but I fear it hasn't been taken seriously.
Currently, I often copy the render to the clipboard and paste in Photoshop to evaluate at actual pixels.

Cross your fingers with me.
--shift studio.

Done deal, fingers crossed SS!

Frank, hey thanks for the help, I figured that most likely some the stuff was because I hadn't found a clever way of doing what I wanted.
The grid thing was a huge help by the way. I found that I don't actually want it 100% invisible...I like it dialed back in opacity to around 20 - 30% the best. That way I can still keep my sense of awareness in the 3D environment, but it doesn't overpower whatever I am working on either, which is perfect for me.
About the "Orbit Selected" thing...I seem to always forget that by default it's turned off. I have to manually turn it on each time I open a file. In the "Style" dropdown menu, "Grid" is always checked and turned on, but "Orbit Selected" is not. Just gets a little mundane always having to turn it on, even if I open and close, and then re-open a file in the same work session. If it's not able to be a set preference, then it would be cool if it would at least stay on if left on the last time the file was opened, you know? So that the file remembers it's last setting? (hopefully I said that right and you know what I mean)

Mmm...maybe I should just shut up until v. 7 comes out...might be "spittin' into a fan" here...

Anyway, a huge thanks for the other tips Frank!!
