Subdivision Modifier

Hey,
Is there any way to control the power of the Subdivision Modifier. For example, say a box and I just want the edges and the corners to rounded.
When I ad the Subdivision Modifier it rounds the edges so much it's a ball ! Right now i'm modeling a car and when I ad the Subdivision Modifier the car turns into a blob !

Add a linear subdivide to an editable object or increase the sections of a parametric object.

It's one of the premade objects or splines that come with Cheetah.

Hi,
I just went to do what you said to do o my car, but to make it look like want it to I have linear subdivide it around three times, which makes it almost impossible to model.
