Smooth cutoff on spotlight

I have a sample scene attached where smooth cutoff on a spotlight does not have a any visible effect (at least to my eye ). On which properties (intensity? cut off angle? effective spot diameter on the reflecting target? distance of the target from the spotlight?) does the visibility of the effect depend?

I thought the smooth cutoff value (0-80) could be interpreted as a percentage of the spot diameter (i.e., the cutoff angle property), but this does not seem to be the case. How should I position the spotlight to have a visible effect?

Hi,
the "smooth cut off" property is not a percentage value. It is given in degrees. So if you set it to 5° the five degrees at the boarder are smoothed.

Thank you very much, that explains why at lower settings, I now actually can see the smoothing (in my actual scene).
