I've been following this guy ( Wintergatan ) for years. He has built a couple of versions of this device and video blogged each step - the latest version ( Marble Machine X ) using far less wood. Basically, he draws the parts he needs in various CAD applications and people from around the world have volunteered to machine them for him. It's programmed using peg boards/wheels, the same way looms were programmed a century ago.
That'll need more than a little extra grease.
Fantastic stuff!Although this isn't a bevel gear, it's part of a separate drive
system which will be under the Modular Motion Blocks.
I needed something which will produce high torque so the worm gear seemed to be a good choice.
Unlike standard straight cut gears, usually called a spur gears,
a worm gear produces thrust forces along the axis of both gears.
The thrust force is greatest on the worm gear, but because it's companion
gear is cut at a slight angle, it will experience some thrust force as well.
