Modelling a door knob

Hi Guys

I'm looking to model a doorknob with its complex curves. Does anyone have any ideas which functions will be best to modify a sphere in order to accomplish a shape like in the picture?

Any help would be great!

Best and easiest way is to draw a spline and drag it to the lathe creator: Thing of Theconds. Unless you want it scripted.

I'd start with cylinder, using the Ring Cut Tool
and the shift key you can build the entire knob.
