3D Printing Advice/Techniques

Starting to get my interest piqued with 3D printing. I was wondering if there were guidelines or advice (or even tutorials) on the best ways to model something for printing.
I would be sending it out somewhere and not printing myself. Also, recommended printers would be appreciated as well.
