Create dice.

Create dice.

I need to create a dice with nice rounded bevels.

Is there a tutorial on this and other basic techniques.

Dice problem

Hi Frank,

I have created a dice using:

create a cube, with 3 sections on each side, make editable
- select the middle square polygon of each side (six),
and do "tools -> polygons -> normal scale" by 2.0
- next, in point mode, take the 8 corner vertices, and manually
scale them down (towards the center).
- then, in edge mode, take the middle section of
each rib of the cube (eight), and scale them down a little, towards centre.
- throw in a subdivision, and ready is case.

It looks great in cheetah and the render is superb.

However I export and import into Iclone the quality is poor.

What do I need to do to correct this ?

Cheers

Lots of steps for a horrible result.

Maybe try this instead:
Make a box with 4 iterations on each side, add Subdivision-modifier - make editable - export. What kind of file formats iClone accepts?

Dice problem

Hi frank,

reallusion has a separate app called 3DExchange that converts models to clone 'prop' format.

It can convert vns, fbx, bvh, obj, 3ds, skp

I get the same issue with your example.

This only seems to happen if subdivision is used.

Dice problem

No. In 3DExchange I can only edit the scale, alignment, Materials.

The same in Iclone once it is a prop.

Hi Frank,

those settings are for the realtime render whilst editing within IClone.

I see the low quality as I import into 3DExchange.

You can install the reallusion apps if you have VMware. (you have to boot into windows first and install, they won't install on a virtual machine ). You can then run them within fusion on the mac.

Thanks for tips - but I really don´t want any other new account/software yet.
Do you have any file formats (fbx, obj, 3ds) checked already? Wonder why they don´t support Collada.
One last guess: Can you set the "smooth angle" to a higher value or use "phong" instead of "Constraint-shading" in Cheetah3d before exporting? Not sure if this will translate into exported files though.

dice problem.

Hi Frank,

Iclone cannot use 3ds, obj etc files directly. You have to use 3DExchange to convert the models into 'props'.

dice problem.

Hi Frank,

One step further,

I change the setting (value 100) and used phong.

Unfortunately it crashed 3DExchange (it was taking a while).

So I re-booted directly into windows and imported the SimpleDice and got the results in the attached image. The front one is the changed one)

So I'll re-boot back into Mac mode and play with these settings.

Mmmh - not from my understanding:
Other functionality includes: full facial and skeletal animation of human and animal figures; lip-syncing;[2] import of standard 3D file types including FBX; a timeline for editing and merging motions; a scripting language (Lua) for character interaction; application of standard motion-capture files;
But you´re the pro here. Sorry- can´t help you any further.

This is the render direct from chettah (which is what I need).

I know exactly what you´re after - but I´m under the impression it has nothing todo with Cheetah3d.
Here´s another dice attempt - maybe check it out in iClone.

dice problem.

Hi Guys,

I posted in the iclone forum and found some settings in 3DExchange called Normal.

I can now change the smoothness of the models. (I said I wasn't a pro).

Thanks for the help guys.

Attached is my creation....

I have created text 'z's and extruded them and placed them around the dice. The edges looked jagged and no amount of changing the normal in 3DExchange works.

From browsing the forum I 'think' I need to edit the UV Editor. I can export the PDF for the box.

Do I then edit the PDF by adding 'Z' and bring it back in.?

A simple idiot tutorial would be great if you know of one.

Cheers

Call the UV-mapper tool - adjust it till it matches the overall shape - then write UV-coords - drag (square-) texture onto it in object browser - done.
