Need advice on snacks

I'm trying to model snacks similar to those depicted in the attached image.

I'm able to create the shapes via splines and extrusions, but am having trouble figuring out how best to create the "rough surfaced" and somewhat random slightly differing diameters of the extrusions to make the treats look realistic.

Anyone have tips on how to create a "cheese puff" type surface using the material editor?

I forgot about the emissive channel, for this snack I adjusted the scale and
colors of the Noise nodes and added a Turbulence node to the Bumpmap channel.

For the original cheesepuffs I realized they "glow" from
their translucent quality so I added the emissive channel.

The snack is quiet well done, zoo.

And the emissive material is also necessary to simulate sss.

Thanks Has, can't wait till we get the real thing.

I'm trying to make a plain corn version but I'm having trouble
getting it to look good. Maybe some salt crystals would help.

Mmmmmmmmm.....

I now have drool marks on my screen from your cheese puff snacks.

Thanks for the idea of using a Crumple modifier and for the Material. It'll definitely help me out.
