Avatar vs. Profile Picture

What's the difference between these two?
I've uploaded my own customized image to both of those pages, but I would appreciate a clarification.

Hi,
the avatar image is displayed under your name in every forum posting you create. That's the more important image.

The profile image is just visible on your forum user profile. I would say you can easily skip that image.
