USD File Format (WWDC Announcement)
Looks like no-one noticed the fact that Apple has a new file format (supposedly produced in collaboration with Pixar) that it's supporting moving forward.

Apple's success rate in this arena in the past has been abysmal, but right now AR seems like a big push and this provides drop-in functionality. Because the file format is actually in-use and mature it is supported by Maya, Houdini, and Alembic.
