"Soft selection" technique?

Hello, all, newbie owner and user here.

While my seven year old and I were playing tonight in Cheetah, I noticed that there is (as yet) apparently no such thing as "soft selection." That is, selecting say a single vertex point and then having the effect you're doing (moving it in the Y axis for example) apply decreasingly to the various vertex points around it.

How would one, for example, go about creating a simple rounded hill without it? This is a one step thing in Silo and the upcoming Hexagon.

Thanks, David & Cal.

Have you tried the magnet tool?

Now I have. But it affects "the closest point to your mouse click" when turned on. Can it not work by first selecting a specific vertex point then turning it on to affect that specific point? And also, how does one force it to lock to a specific direction/axis? It seems to organically pull in all three at once?

Hi DaveyJJ,
I know that soft selections are still missing in Cheetah3D and they are already on my to do list. They even have a quite high priority.

I also have a normal brush on my to do list which will allow easy painting of reliefs or terrains onto a mesh.

Hmmm... I guess I really don't know what the heck you guys are talking about. What would be the use? Martin can you enlighten us (me)?

Thanks, Martin!

Jake, here's how'd I explain it (given that I am a 3D newbie surrounded at work by 3D gurus) ... right now the Magnet tool isn't as precise as it could be. You should be able to apply what the Magnet tool does to a specific vertex, face or edge and also restrict the subsequent movement/deformation to one (or more) of the three axis. You also need the ability to without dialogue box chnage the radius of the effect and also the falloff value.

Silo allows you to even modify the size/radius of your soft selection just by scrolling the mouse wheel.
