second cheetah rendering

second cheetah rendering

This is a Form Fonts publicity scene, which I decided to chuck into Cheetah. I used the same scene settings as before and am flabbergasted by how good it looks, WITH NO TWEAKING. Why can't all software be this easy? (SketchUp apart ;-)

I have noticed a couple of things in this scene though, there seems to be a lot of artifacts under the glass on the Noguchi table and also two of the three apples did not render - any clues anyone?

2nd Rendering

Overall this is a very nice rendering. Not sure what the carpet artifacts are or why the apples didn't render, but you still can use this image - just tell everyone that it's a prescription glass table and that the 2 non-rendered apples are in fact onions.

;-)

What were your rendering settings and how long did it take to render this?

Unfortunately, I've been too busy to dig very deep into Cheetah3D, but I'm very impressed by the quality, the incredible value and the superb programming by Martin. To think that Cheetah is the product of just one person is astonishing, especially when you consider how fast Martin is to add significant new features. I'm really looking forward to using this extensively with SketchUp.

thanks ee

I used the pig scene, deleted the pig and imported this scene as 3ds, nothing complicated! It took about 25mins to render on my 867 12.1" Powerbook, 512Mb Ram

That's actually a very cool image. Did you model the person yourself?

If you feel comfortable with doing so, I'm sure we could work out what the rendering problems were by taking a look at the actual scene (you could edit the original post and attach it there). Some suggestions might be, though:

1. Increase the "Oversampling Pass 1" setting by clicking the icon of a camera in the objects editor. Set it to perhaps 4x or 8x: the render will be MUCH slower, but chances are the artefacts will - at least - be smoothed out, if not gone completely.

2. Find the material for the glass of the table, and make sure it has "Fourier" checked. Then increase the "samples" setting to at least 2000 in the Radiosity tag on the camera - it's the colourful icon, next to the one of the letters "HDRI".

3. For the apples, ensure that you applied the same texture to all three of them - it's an easy mistake to make.

These will make it take longer, but c'est la vie. If it's any consolation, I do all my work on a 500Mhz G3 with 320Mb RAM, and thirty-hour renders are not unknown.

Randy, thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I also admire you for perservering with 30 hour render times! ouch!

The interesting thing is that the apples are sketchUp outputs as well, and all three are rendered fully in SketchUp, I'm not complaining just surprised that everything I have bought into Cheetah from SU has been fine ... so far.

The little girl is available at www.formfonts.com and was modelled by Alan Fraser. As for making the scene available as these are all commercial models I'm afraid I can't make them generally available ... sorry

Beautiful Allister!

I suppose the segmentation on the chair backs, and the head roll on the chaise can be smoothed out?

BTW, if that is a Nessen lamp at the corner, and it does look like one, but it might not be, well anyway the post of the Nessen is offset on the base as it relies on the dead weight of the base to balance the cantilever of the extending arm.

The head roll can be smoothed, not sure why it wasn't, everything else came in from SU smoothed?

I don't think it is a Nessen, as I got it from a designer store which was closing down, but it could be a cheap repro? it's now sitting in my lounge with a Habitat shade on it which doesn't quite fit properly as it sits too low on the extending arm.
