maintaining an editable master when cloning...

Probably a simple answer but I couldn't find it in the forum.

Ok, spiral staircase by using clone tool, fine, but what's the easiest way to do this and maintain the ability to edit all of them ?

Like when you use a modifier, you can modify the master.

It's monday and I can think staight on Monday.

Luke

Hi and Huh.
Funny - same idea here with just a straight spline instead.

and another question...

OK Problem 2.

based on the original spiral, is it possible to have a shape facing in a constant direction as per the bottom chain row on a sline that is going uphill like the top row ( but in the top row, what ever I do the plank will not align facing you and in upright fashion).

tg_jp seemed to have a good solution re the transform tool but I cant make it work the way I want it, whatever I try

Once again help here would be more than welcome.

As at the momen, the only way I can figure this out is to to it manually which could drive you mad if you have about a hundred objects to align.

Luke

Dear Frank

no it's me not explaining things well.

Another stab...see picture of say a handrail going around the corner and down.

I'm trying to get a chain that is constant in alignment but vertical on the down slope of the spline.

I think this picture makes more sense

Luke

Hi Luke.
Ok next try.
Think I have one for you.
(But forget about "chain creator" at the moment:tongue: )
This is different.

chain massacre again.

Hi Luke.
Ok I noticed you don´t like this one from yesterday:oops:
So here´s the best - not perfect at all - chain creator approach I can think of (at the moment:mrgreen: )

So I hope you like it better.:D

Dear Frank

no it's not that, you always come out with great solutions. I guess it's some thing that can't be done at the moment with the current toolset.

Or at least not using the chain modifier ( it's almost if the chain modifier could use an extra setting to force a object to remain vertical or horizontal, while selecting the constant alignment setting !)

I have attached a file and picture of what another application of a solution here would be valuable. (also the ability to work in a non destructive mode was one of may aims here)

I thought I was getting close with the transform modifier, but in the end I was getting into more of mess it.

Regards

Luke

Don´t take me too seriously.
Nevertheless I was starting over just too make it clear on neutral ground.
So I like to announce that I think I´m pretty close, without any extra of cost&tools.
But have a look yourself.

Ok.
Frank-from-Discovery-Channel speaking:
I think you can take this as a formula: Helix angle end dived by Chain links= dH.
So I have here: 720/68=10.588
And this looks too good to be true. But it works.

Dear Frank

yep, that's good and it does work. Just have to make sure i get the maths right on the dH...now, where's that calculator I left on the table :)

Thanks

Luke

The calculator application (spotlight "calc") is better than Dashboard's -- it can go into Scientific or Programmer mode.
