Object Visibility as an Animatable Parameter

I encountered this issue when attempting to animate my weasel pulling out his gun. Since when he's not using it the gun is parented to one bone and when it's being used it's parented to another, this involved rendering the whole thing twice. No big deal, but...
 
Hmm... perhaps you could have two guns, one holstered and one in hand, and keep the in-hand gun's bone scaled to 0 and/or positioned out of the way until it's needed, then quickly key it back to normal?
