Roadmap Cheetah3D

I'm loving Cheetah3D since 2009 and still is a nice little app for quick & fast meshes. The only thing through the years i'm lacking is a clear roadmap of the future. What new features are coming? What is the timeline? Will it stay niche or will it get bigger features?

I like to know what i'm investing in (my time & money).

I know it's not a popular question but someone got to ask ;-)

It has everything you need already my good sir Radian, "quick & fast meshes"
Although any updates are cool and I look forward to them.

Well, I would like to see:
GPU rendering
Sculpting
Liquid/Smoke physics
Hair particle system
Dedicated addon system
...

I agree with you that some things, like GPU rendering, is desperately needed.

The last update was about a year ago. Would love to see what @Martin has worked on since then. Or a future roadmap.

One thing that worries me a bit is that the initial release of Cheetah3D was on the December 1, 2003; 22 years ago - and since there's been such a large gap between updates during recent years, I'm worried that Martin is losing interest in the project. Which is VERY understandable after 22 years. If that is the case, I would love if Cheetah3D became open-source so people with more time can continue Cheetah's development and legacy. It would be sad if C3D died with Martin.

I share this opinion. There is little to none connection with the future of Cheetah3D. There is no feedback, no roadmap. We can only "hope" that it will be developed further. Of course we can enjoy the app "as it is" but it can be so much more.

Big ask, I know, but I would love to see Cheetah ported to other operating systems. Ubuntu Linux would be ideal.

That's completely unrealistic because Cheetah3D makes extremely effective use of macOS technologies that aren't available on other platforms, and... as mentioned above: it's developed by a single person.

While we're at it, my quick wish list:

- Normal Editing
- More baking options (e.g. baking normal maps)
- GPU rendering using Apple Silicon Raytracing API
- ability to instantiate something in the scene without duplicating it and without using "particles" (more like "Prefabs").
- ability to open multiple Cheetah3D windows, with the ability to manage tabs in each of them (so I can use my multi-display setup)

:)

While I have no experience with multi-display set-ups tabbed view is definitely available:

Not really a wish for Cheetah3D, but a fond memory of my days with Bryce3D that this thread reminded me of -- something I've never seen in any other 3D app: Once you had opened a render window for your Bryce scene, you could drag a square selection anywhere within it. The app would then draw new render controls next to the selection ( even giving it a drop shadow so you could easily see your selected area). If you hit the start button, it would render only this small patched area and automatically merge it with the previously rendered image that was behind your patch. It was a great, fast way to fix tiny details or even replace textures on any small object within the render, something that really came in handy back when full renders could take hours (or even days). I really miss that ability.

True, Blender has this feature too and found this super useful.

As the amount of bots is increasing and there is no sign of life from Martin to handle this. I'm thinking of leaving this forum. It was such a nice place for support, tutorials, help, design sharing etc. Now it's botland City :). Maybe Martin can assign some people to moderate and kickstart this forum again?
