Braided Cable

I need a braided cable texture so I used the height image
from a free dirty wicker basket PBR to start with.

Looks pretty good already but I think I can improve it.

I came up with this pattern using PS.

Which tiles nicely on a cylinder.

But it's a headache getting the lighting right to make it look good.
I'm using the same pattern on the bump channel so maybe I need to change something there.

Looks better, thanks.
What did you do to change it?

I've already made another one, with a mind towards the bump map.

Yep. When building a bump map, always stretch the full gamut, from 0% to 100%. You can always use a Mix node with white as the other input to keep it subtle.

Thanks MT, I was thinking along those lines.

Here's the new one I made, but haven't tested yet.

Mine is something like in between your first and your second one.
Also I shortened for smaller file size.

I have those in my bath under the sink for cold and warm water to the tap (plastic tube inside).
One was rusty and and burst on Good Friday night this year, forcing an untimely cleaning session.
Thanks goodness I was sleeping in the next room so I could react immediately and avoid serious water damage.

I had one on my washing machine burst once. 🚰

Now I'll probably have to make another one for farther away shots as this one doesn't look so good.

I was considering using this material on a sweep/spline/rope tag for posing and animation purposes.

Q: How do you map that which can not be mapped. There are no polygons
in a Sweep to select, so you can't use the UV Mapper or unwrap UVs.

A: The Sweep Creator apparently makes the UVs so you can use the scale
parameters in the Sample section of the Texture Image Loader to adjust fit.

This material is also good for kern-mantle rescue rope.
