A beveled object does not produce what I expect

Maybe I don't understand the Bevel function, but it doesn't produce what I expect.

- The first example below is a cube without a bevel.
- The cube with a simple bevel produces a distorted background.
- In the third example I have split the front polygon and merged it back with the rest. Now the background is not distorted as I expect.

The same happens with a beveled cube exported and imported as a Collada file from Blender.
Particularly strange results are produced when using glass materials.

Can someone enlighten me if this is a bug or a feature?

Before I want a look into the file please lower the Smooth angle: of the box which is 45° by default and too high when simple bevel/chamfer come into play and will bent the surface.

Yes, that's it.
I experimented for so long and completely overlooked this option. The distortion disappears at 35 degrees in this case.

Thanks, Frank.
