Camera Lighting problem

When I model if I highlight (select) some polygons and then turn the object the highlighted (selected) parts go into the light from the camera and I can no longer tell if they are highlighted (selected). Is there anyway to get rid of the shine / light on the object so this does not happen?

What I did right from the start is to adjust the "Default Material Specular-" and "Polygon Selection-"Colors in the Preferences➝Colors:
