Replicate carved wood

Do you need it procedurally? Every image based texture will do it in flat-mapping via UV-mapper.

* Download a useful texture for the required type / grain of wood (or take a photo)
* plug the image into the node of the material
* fiddle parameters if required

Experimenting with the wood texture node:
Ugly artefacts up close, but okay from a distance:

Hi Guys & Girls.....

Had a play around.

It looks okay but not real.

What magic potion do I need to add. Bearing in mind it needs to be readable as a logo.

PS the forum said a zip file of 800k was too large ( What is the limit ?)

The wooBack1.jpg seems to work better with a simple grained wood at the back. I did this with a rendered png add a shadow nd an image background.

Any thoughts, improvements appreciated.

Hi Steve,

the models and wood texture are ok IMHO but the light not, especially the hard shadow.
You need to find yourself some good studio HDRI on the web and then in Cheetah render don't use radiosity, the HDRI sampling will do soft shadows (Falcon renderer would be better, but too slow for 4k).
For the material: bump is too intense, reflection too (need fresnel with blur instead) and the image contrast is too high.
Better mix with some color, see screenshot:

Yep, that white studio hdri the misoversaturated posted is what I use for nearly everything. I like it because it gives pretty good lighting out of the box and it doesn't give a heavy color cast one way or another. Pair it with a few well placed lights in the scene and it does an awesome job.

I pretty much never use the procedural wood materials as I never can get them to look realistic enough.

Oops, that was the radiosity version, here is the HDRI sample version:

Thanks for the input,

I added the HDRI image and the wood grain.

When I render I am getting this garbage in the background.

I noticed a blank PBR in the materials. What do I need to do with this please.

Hi Steve, are you still on Cheetah3D v6?
I modified your file with a ground plane and a PBR material which won't work in v6.
If you don't want to use v7, just use a default material.

I also noticed I could not save the project.

I have upgraded to the latest version and it is working okay now. I am on 7

Thanks for the help

Work in progress so will change.

1. How do I cut the letters out of the box. Ie to get a machines out effect.
2. Is there a bump material out there that would give a ‘distressed’ finish. This where you bash the timber around, hit with a hammer a few times.
3. On the website I used an eye drop to select a colour from the image. I added a gradient from white to the new colour in the main section then in the photo section I reversed it. I think it works okay. Any thoughts on this instead of just a plain white background. I might get a few more woodworking tool models, render them and add some images to the text.
4. Any input appreciated

Cheers

Steve Warby.

* You may want to experiment with the displacement modifier to achieve surface irregularities. There should be some threads on that in the archive. Tweak the loaded image in an app of your liking until you get what you want. It needs a bit of playing around but is well worth the effort.

Hi Steve, I think your model looks great and will do so with any plain background (not too dark).

1. How do I cut the letters out of the box. Ie to get a machines out effect.
If you want cutout text you'll need to use booleans (tool, modifier or creator).
The box you cut out from should have that many segments that there are several for each letter to avoid smoothing artefacts.
If you mean to do engraving, use a displacement modifier with a greyscale map (16bit png) of your text, like Helmut already suggested.
There are several threads on this on the forum, sadly the search function sucks, better try to google with Cheetah3D as a keyword.

2. Is there a bump material out there that would give a ‘distressed’ finish. This where you bash the timber around, hit with a hammer a few times.
I'd need a reference image in order to decide how a bump map needs to look like.

The first image is what I am after. A nice polished finish but with 'chunks ' out of it.
