Toonz Animation Software Goes Open Source

Toonz Animation Software Goes Open Source

As stated in the title. Some of you may have already heard this. Just in case some haven't though, I'm posting it here.

This is the same software that Ghibli Studios in Japan has used to make their animated movies. I know there were some Hayao Miyazaki fans on the forums here that I've talked to.

Good luck with it. :p
It´s the wrong URL BTW.
Scanner don´t work with the MacOSX version - at least I can´t get it to be recognized. The UI is a horror in my opinion.
Making movies with it seems a way of punishment.

Cheers

My wife is the one that's more excited about it.

Here is the link for those that can't Google. :p

Yeah, they say that scanner is Win only near the download link. I run all three major OS's though (Mac, Linux, Win). So no worries there.
What can I say, sometimes I like to briefly torture my eyes with horrible UI's on occasion ... like Blender for instance. That way when I come back to C3d it feels even more sleek and luxurious.

I guess since it's open source now, anyone that knows how to program could possibly fix the interface up. Which will probably happen at some point anyway. I'll have to report back how much my wife takes out her frustrations on me up after playing around with this. :) :) :)

I'm with Frank on this one. I downloaded opened it up and then deleted it. I'll stick with anime studio pro 11.2. Pricey but so much easier to use. another free one is TUPI. for frame by frame.

Hi Simon.
Please let me know when your wife mastered the first steps and can tell bit more about it.
I was curious about the centerline autotracer till they told me it´s not for MacOS user.

Cheers
Frank

Thanks for the feedback Uncle and Frank.

My wife's plan is to do some animations this summer. She's an elementary art school teacher. So she won't have time to start until her summer break. I'm sure if it's difficult to use, she will want something easier. In all honesty cartoon style animation isn't really my thing. So I didn't even try it out the software. I got a free license a few years ago to Toon Boom Studio, but I installed it and only opened it a few times. I may go see if I can find the installer and serial as her laptop still has snow leopard on it.

I'll have to report back if she makes it to a stage of having a cool cartoon that she's ok with me sharing.

I'll check out anime studio and TUPI if she's really in to doing it.

Toon Boom Studio has been replaced by Harmony™ via perpetual license or subscription models. :frown:

Cheers
Frank

Yeah I saw that when I went to look at it last night. I'm NOT a fan of subscription based software. Hopefully the older version I have will work on her older OS.

I've been experimenting with OpenToonz a fair bit since it's come out and for the most part I'm pretty excited by it. Not only is it cool that it's completely free and open-source, but it's a strong program for making more traditional 2D animation.

If you’re unsure have a look at some other animation software that are out there… There are plenty of 2D animation packages floating about now and many of the free ones are quite powerful. explore and test it out : https://www.xp-pen.com/forum-1727.html
