dielines

dielines

Hi,
Can anyone help me on this? I am looking for the best way to fold this dieline up into a usable model... is this possible?
Thanks!

Rich

Sure it´s possible - but to be save I´d generate nGons per flat surface and snap points to the underlying pdf-points.

Cheers
Frank

PS: added a quick start file:

Works beautifully Frank. :icon_thumbup:

Hey Rich, first delete the unnecessary parts
of the pdf/spline to get a less cluttered view.

Then use the Create Polygon tool to make each panel by just counting
the corners of a particular panel and clicking around in any wonky pattern.

Then in point mode you can snap each vertex point to those
corner points one at a time, that should get you started.

PS:Use the center ball of the transform
tool and set the snapping to Component.

Better&faster&furious: make sure transform-gadget is in move-mode - hold shift+alt keys down - hover over point till its highlighted - then click&drag to a corresponding point and so on - no preselecting necessary.

Awesome Frank, you have been trying to teach me that for
some time now, but I've been to dense to get it till now.

Sorry guys, I am still not up to your speed on this program. Are there any tutorials on how to fold up a die line or create a model from a dieline in order to use it as an actual model to put art on and render?

Rich

Try to mimic a paper folding process by selecting polygons an turning them at their approbate edges to 90° with the help of the gadget mode reading the status bar for the angle values:
You might need to flip all normals as the printed side will be underneath.

Here's some steps to get going from ground zero.
Import die line pdf into Cheetah.

Delete unnecessary elements like dimension lines.

Use Coord System Tool to Center Pivot Point, then Burn Pivot Point.
(This gets the PP in the center of the spline group and sets the coords to same).

Now change the position of the spline group to 0,0,0.
(This moves the spline group to word center)

Since you must have an editable object to use the Make
Polygon Tool, start with a Plane and make it editable.

Now you can use the Make Polygon tool to make each panel, but only on one side.
Then you can use the use a Symmetry Modifier or Mirror to finish the other side.

I hope this is helpful.

Hey Guys,
It's been quite some time since my original post and quite awhile since I have used this and forgot how.
Wondering if anyone made any video tutorials showing show to import a dieline then fold it up to create the package?

Hi Frank -
I get to the point where I make the 2 planes children of each other, select the plane and its blue, click the line where I want it to pivot, use component to snap to edges, click back to object mode, but then nothing happens, . It doesnt pivot.... I must be missing a step?

After the pivot point is set double click again to use the transform tool to rotate. It's shown in the gif of reply No10.
I guess you' re still on v6.x. because Merge is the new Import-children.
And there's edge-rotate on selected polygons too.

Cheers

ahhh, maybe that is one of my issues.... I will have to check to see what version I am on when I get back to my desktop.
