Then how come it doesn't wrap around it properly? Seems it just smears around. I'm trying to wrap a leather texture around a dagger handle and the texture doesn't show, it's just a green smear. Thoughts?

You can actually check the alignment by hitting the edit-button at the image loader while in UV-editor.
Uugh - where did this thing came from? I ask because it´s triangulated.
You seem pretty confident with splines. I´d use a spline with the lathe-creator because you´ll receive perfect UVs by default:
But the UV-mapper in cylindrical projection should do it as well.
