Resurrection of an old thread - because a search lead me here 
The material browser needs some love for sure - but the inability to read entire names is just plain painful. See this >
These materials are variations of each other. I use long names - always have. I can't see them, and just try re-naming a long name when you can't see it.
In short, the material browser and the material node editor needs some thoughtful consideration. It's low-hanging fruit - with a big payoff as a boost in usability. Please Martin. Pretty please? I guess it should go in wishes forum. I'm shocked there isn't really anything there about it already.
