Polygon Paste.js

Great tutorial Zoohead!
I really prefer video tutorials with voice to any other type.

Near the end you mention that the method can be used with two different sizes of tubes. Thats what I'm looking to do, but thats where I run into trouble - when I make the disc smaller, the points of the disc don't fall on edges of the cylinder - whats the approach then?

Thanks for taking the time to help - it is appreciated.

Well, like Ben Franklin, I had a 50% chance of getting it right.
We have to live with his mistake but I can correct mine.

It's slightly different for a smaller tube splice,
more like putting a handle on a coffee mug,
but at an angle. I'll do another video today.

Here's a screen shot of the splice with a smaller tube, in this
situation I needed a disc with 12 sections... more later.

I said any angle, so I wanted to make sure.

Here the small tube on the left is rotated 40 degrees from front, at an inclination of 67 degrees.

Shift Studio maybe you can give me the parameters, tube sizes and angles.
That way it will be more entertaining, and I will see how far I can get my foot in my mouth.

Hi Zoohead,

maybe this tube joining stuff should move out of this thread?
I know you have another thread on the topic not using the paste polygon script.

but for now...

I actually only need the tube to be at 90 degrees for the time being.
In my example attached, radius of the big tube is 0.5, radius of the small tube is 0.4. Both cylinders are 16 sided, but I'm not fussy about any of those numbers. I just am interested in the method. I do prefer smaller number of sides in cylinders for manageability's sake.

Thanks for your insights. I never did find a satisfactory solution on my own.

Good point, but as long as we're using Polygon Paste, I think it's appropriate.
I will post another link to the videos in the tutorial section though.

A link to the new video is available on the first page of this thread.

Thanks Zoohead and Hiroto!

Yes, the bridge saves some work nicely.

The area that you bridged Hiroto, and you welded Zoohead - is that technically perfect? Not that it matters, but since the larger cylinder's points did not move down vertically, I suspect its not quite geometrically perfect?
Regardless doesn't really matter because it looks perfect.

Now, if the radius of the smaller tube was 0.3, we would want to use a disc with 12 sides right? I'll experiment tomorrow.

Great work you two! Now the question, if second tube was smaller and on an angle, that should work anyways correct?

Taking into account the effect of the Subdivision Modifier
and the magic of Catmull-Clark, I would think it is reasonably accurate.
Try making the final model editable, and check the geometry
as a finer mesh and see what you think.

You're correct, in this situation, to splice a tube of .3 would need 12 corners.

There are two angles to speak of here. Rotation, which means
nothing if it's just a straight tube, because you can just rotate
the whole thing. And then there's the inclination. Alone neither
poses much of a problem, but in combination and at odd
angles like 67/40, it's a little trickier. Give it a try.

I haven't used this one in a while... I think I'm doing it correctly, but I can't make this script work anymore - in C3Db23.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

If it isn't working, Hiroto, do you think you can fix it?

Thanks in advance!

After pulling my hair out trying different things, I found that I wasn't using the latest version of the script.

I was using a version from May 2014. After I installed an updated version from October 2014, it works as expected!

Trouble with direction coord = 'object'

Here I am again with a polygon paste issue.

I use the script regularly with success, but I usually am moving the mesh along one of the global x,y,z axes.

Today I need to move a mesh (the blue octagon) along it's x axis and paste on the Cylinder.
I set the 'direction coord.' parameter to 'object' but the mesh will only move along the global axes.

Can anyone confirm using the file below?

If the script works as expected, any idea why its not working here?

Thanks, Shift Studio.

p.s. sorry for the huge screen shot haha

I believe it isn´t working as your rotation value of the pasting object is reset and no longer corresponding to the choosing axis.
I made a similar object - put it in place - adjusted the rotation value- use the Y-axis and hit apply - bingo.

Cheers
Frank
