one thing that I also did was burn the scale/transform before the inner extrude at step 7 to get mine to look like yours.

:) Excellent tutorial Master Beckmann. It’s succinct and explicit. The pictures clarify all (“A picture is worth a thousand words”). It gives me a good idea how to more concisely achieve certain shapes.

I'm using a 6-sided cylinder to make a bolt head. How come my bevels at the corners are sinking in and not rounding outward after I add the subdivide modifier? I beveled level 1 linear...
 
I guess it´s the tris on the top/bottom preventing from evenly establishing coplanar faces.
Use either quads or nGon as a fill at top&bottom and you´re fine.
