Hi,
thanks for the info. But I also had 3 crashes within the first minutes.

And the time Gimp run it didn't really look and feel like a native Mac app. I don't think Adobe has to worry too much yet.

Bye

Same here - placed my first bug report within a minute or so. I have to stay with the X11 version at least because the cage deformer won´t work with the native app. Bummer.

Hi,

I am on Mac since back in 2004 and Gimp & Inkscape were the only graphic apps I used until Apple introduced the AppStore. Since then a couple of interesting apps evolved. Now I am using Pixelmator ... never opened Gimp again. Same for Inkscape since I am using iDraw now.

I think Gimp and Inkscape are both great apps ... used them a lot. But now there are better alternatives out there. And this is the good thing, that we are getting more and more nifty apps for the Mac.

BTW There was already an OSS alternative do Gimp a while ago ... an app called Seashore (http://seashore.sourceforge.net/The_Seashore_Project/About.html) but I think it's pretty dead now. The problem with multi-platform apps like Gimp & Co is that they always seem to be behind the pace regarding state-of-the-art of OSX development.

Regards.

I take this new GIMP version as a starting point - when it will get 16bit support I´ll be more than happy - because that´s what i´m really missing (I know Photoline can do).
@ Caustics
How do you convert a selection into a path in Pixelmator? (Its super dark UI is a no-go here:redface: )
How do you autotrace an image to vectors in iDraw?

Cheers

Hi Frank,

I didn't want to state that either Pixelmator nor iDraw are feature-complete nor better or worser than comparing them with Gimp or Inkscape. Both are relatively new apps and Gimp is around for over 16 years now (and I am grateful for this). I think Pixelmator and iDraw had a very good start especially the 1.0 version of iDraw is a Hit and both are looking into a bright future.

Seems that Gimp's native Mac approach lacks in this aspect as of the comments posted here ;-)

BTW never used selection => path nor image => vectors but I understand their purpose and that they could be great timesavers depending on the situation and frequence you need them ... fortunately there are always several ways which lead to Rome ;-)

And I like the dark UI of PM too, but of course it has its own glitches as every software has.

Regards.

Thanks for the info.

Gimp I started using when 5.5 wouldn't work on my Intel Mac and I find it actually has some nicer feature than photoshop did in certain areas. While other areas it lacks. But overall, for a free General Use product, it works well for basic stuff in most cases.

X11 Gimp still works great, so hopefully they'll iron out the bugs in the new one here.

If you want an inexpensive photoshop alternative, try PhotoLine. And don't forget Photoshop elements.

Inkscape is very good though.
