bump texture problem

Hi!
pretty sure I'm missing something here but after several experiments I have to ask for help...

I'm using a high res woodfloor texture (arroway, it's #12) which is 6000x6000 px (attached real pixel cut outs of diff and bump maps); now if you look at the render samples you'll notice the bump(?) at the joints is totally out of scale compared to the thin black line in both diff and bump maps, as the map was low res or something.

Of course I have "filter texture" disabled and AA set to "color". I also tried to mix these settings with quite slight differences in outputs. This happens with both the proper bump map and using diff "value" filtered by a gradient node (render samples, in this order). renders are 1440x900 with mid/high pref. (don't mind reflection changes, it's intentional)
the bump on the veins inside each panel is quite accurate though...

any help very appreciated 'cos I'm totally confused

thanks in advance,
Alessandro

First I´m wondering Cheetah renders 6000px textures at all without downsampling. Thought 2K map is end of line.
Second; Have you checked UV mapping? Select your floor polygons, go in UV editor mode and hit edit at the image loader.

Cheers

bingo!

so the solution is an high quality downsampling in PS or a cut out at 2k at full quality but 1/9 of the surface... I will try both and see what's better

it's a shame Cheetah can't use the full res texture, now that's 64bit...

thanks,
Alessandro

I don´t think it´s a RAM problem.
Honestly: what do you expect from a 6000px texture on a 1440x900 render?

Cheers
Frank

of course I'm thinking about bigger renders... but then again you're probably still right, even for a 5k render. maybe I'm just obsessed by high resolutions LOL

thanks again,
Alessandro

just to confirm that was indeed the problem.
downscaling leaded to poor quality so I cropped 1/9 of the original texture. If more obvious repetitions will be an issue I'll probably make all 9 pieces and manually tile them on the floorplane...

now I'm wondering if the limit is 2000 or 2048?

thanks!
Alessandro

Maybe the limit is at 4K= 4096x4096px.
I did some testing and find:
I made some tests:
9600²px texture map on 4000x4000px render: crisp&clear
4096²px texture map on 4000x4000px render: crisp&clear
2048²px texture map on 4000x4000px render: blurry

9600²px texture map on 2000x2000px render: crisp&clear
4096²px texture map on 2000x2000px render: crisp&clear
2048²px texture map on 2000x2000px render: blurred

Hope this helps.

I know it´s hard to tell from these images.

4k would be more than reasonable as a limit... maybe the doctor will jump in and give us the final word?

thanks for your time, Frank
Alessandro

made some further tests... with 4k textures the problem is still there, although less evident than with 6k. So it seems Cheetah starts "blurring" images over 2k...

Martin?

cheers,
Alessandro
