Normals angle per polygon

Hi I'm sure this is possible in some other apps.

*The ability to set the normal angle on individual faces, rather than the global object. Imagine a scene with a pipe and a wall, You'd want hard edges with the wall and sorft edges on the pipe.*

If the pipe and wall are two separate objects, you can set different 'smooth' parameters for each (eg 'flat' for the wall and 'constraint' for the pipe)...

... or have I misunderstood?
 
Sorry, I havent let much info out regarding my process...

My aim is to have the assets be one object with a single texture sheet for gaming purposes. My idea is 10x10 meter prefabs that people can buy and drop together like lego.

This request is also relevant to character models too, and again 1 texture sheet would be preferred. Soft head and skin normals, and hard collar, cuffs plus clothes in general.
