Importing models to existing model, how to determine scale?

I did a search and couldn't find the answer.

I have a building and I imported a car to sit in front of the building in my Cheetah model (it was a free 3d download) my question is how do I size the car to be the same scale as my building built in SU? I just eye'd it in but I would really like to know how to check actual dimensions and such for the future.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I think now in 4.0 there is a ruler tool. I haven't used it so I'm not sure this is what you want. Maybe it will help.

Thanks,
Greg

Thanks Greg,

Though I can see verticies in my car model and I have selected the coord tool from the menu I can't get the tool to select points to give a read out. That's what the help file said to do, I also made the car editable.

Hello, Innerdream --

Do you have Point Selection mode enabled (Leeft hand side of toolbar)?

Hi,
the ruler tool in v4.0 is just the beginning of that tool. I plan to enhance to tool more and more. At the moment the ruler tool just can measure distances and angles between vertices of a polygon object.

If you import you models via .3ds into Cheetah3D. Cheetah3D autonormalized the objects to a unit box. The reason behind that behaviour is that there a dozen of 3D modeler out there which export to .3ds and many of the export is different measure. So sometimes a care comes in normal. Sometimes it is 100 time to big.

But you can disable the autonormalization feature in the preferences window. Go to the .3ds importer properties and set the import scale factor to 1 or 0.01 or whatever works best with the modeler you use. Then the proportions will be maintained and all imported models will be scaled by the same factor.

Bye,
Martin

Hi Tim - yes.

Martin,

Not sure I quite follow what you've said as it's 5:30 AM! I'll check back and give that a try. Just a wish...SU has a pretty good ruler tool, I would like to see that kind of functionality in Cheetah especially for us Architectural people where scale is everything.

Thanks!
