Still Life Experiment

I thought I'd go a little "classical" with a model/render. My girlfriend is in art classes and I've been seeing her still life paintings over the last year and I thought, what the heck, let's see if this is boring or exciting with 3D. All modeled in Cheetah. I decided to go with a hybrid in textures, using painted textures instead of photographic to give it a more painterly, artsy feel. One large point light and radiosity (no HDRI). the window reflection in the bottle is a painted image of a window on a plane in front of the bottle. Turned out to be fun.

side note: I didn't use any reference objects or images - I kinda just winged it - so the scale(s) may be off.

This was actually my first "test" to see if I wanted to pursue a more involved layout. One point light with Ambient Occlusion and an HDRI for reflection. All Cheetah - no post processing.

On your table/floor and back wall what size and type textures did you use or is it a procedural texture? Thanks. It is so well defined. Great work, to me, and this is truly just nit picking(sorry)your egg looks a bit pointy to me. It's probably just me.

Thanks Zoo & Uncle for the comments! It was fun to create.

I found a painted canvas texture sized at 1889 × 1333 - I then played with the colors and I also manually made it into a seamless texture. When I applied it to the object I could then repeat it since it was seamless and did so 2x times vertically and horizontally. The "table" surface is simply a Plane with 30x30 polys - I then searched for a folded fabric displacement map and then applied that with a Displacement Modifier, added Subdivision and a Bend.

The egg may be pointy - - I did it all from memory without consulting any images or objects (a no no in modeling ... oops). I guess we could call it an "interpretation" of an egg

That's outstanding.
What really catches my eye, is that it's painterly but it's also 3D....that's a really unique effect. I've seen others attempt that before, but not in such a balanced, 50/50 blend of the two. The painterly aspect doesn't compete or outshine the 3D aspect, and the 3D aspect doesn't compete or outshine the painterly aspect. It's completely balanced, wow. Really nice work...

Thanks Larry, I borrowed the idea after watching a few Hayao Miyazaki animation films, specifically "Spirited Away." In that film are a few moments where we are clearly looking at (or moving through) a 3D model, but the textures are completely hand painted - it is a lovely effect - especially when water colors are used. This Still Life experiment was me playing around with that aesthetic. I'm pretty happy with the result and may continue to explore more with it. Thanks.

That hits the nail on the head!

Yes the egg is too pointy and too flat on the other end :)

--shift studio.

I'm going to check out "Spirited Away" to see your source of inspiration for this, because like I said, I've just never seen anyone absolutely nail that look better than you did Rene. Frankly I am amazed that you did this with only one prior attempt to get your motor running, and that one too is excellent.

It's things like this that make me believe that there is so much more that can be done with 3D work than we see on a daily basis. Not that straight 3D illustration is boring or limiting or anything like that - it's not at all for me, I love it - but I can't help but wonder how many different styles and "wrinkles" to the format there can be when people think "outside of the box" like this. It's just limitless and it seems like there is so much more still left to be discovered.

Fantastic work. I really love it.

"Spirited Away" is a fantastic film. If you want painterly 3D you might want to check out "What Dreams May Come". You could love or hate the movie, but the things they did with painterly 3D illustrative effects are astounding.

Nice composition....well done

Hi Rene
You sure know how to work magic with lighting, colors and materials!
I love the soft appearance of watercolors.

Looks like you and your girlfriend make a good team. I suspect you two inspire each other.

I especially love the pumpkin.
Come this fall it would look good in TerryG's "Tree House" scene.

Good grouping. I wonder what if would look like if you used photoshop filters like palette knife. I might like an impressionist painting like Cezanne or one of his contemporaries.

Looks great! Had my fair share of still lifes in art school.

My wife love's the Miyazaki animations. She wants to get all of the movies on BluRay, but most of them aren't available in the US yet. You may like Mushishi if you haven't seen it.
