Updates?

I was hoping we'd see a major update with Yosemite's launch. I'm sure we'll see some amazing stuff come launch. Just anxious for updates with new tools that fill in some of the missing pieces.

I don't think Cheetah 3d's updates are in any way tied to OS updates (although, we can hope, in the cases of stuff like Metal and OpenCL). Frank is still on Snow Leopard IIRC.

Yes, I'm a little bit to late for the Yosemite launch. I actually planed to release v7 shortly after Yosemite but I was a little bit too optimistic so I still need some months. But v7 will be worth the wait.

Thanks for that Martin.

Will v7 still work on Snow Leopard ?

Thanks

Is there any way you can give a hint of what will be in the new version? Usually, when something as complex as 3D software gets an upgrad, it tends to focus on one particular area.

I'm hoping for rigging and character animation!

Tht's difficult to say. So far my developmental builds still run on Snow Leopard but I'm thinking about dropping SL support. The problem is that certain libraries which Cheetah3D uses no longer support SL. For example the FBX SDK v2015 has a min. system requirement of OS X 10.8. And I actually planned to release v7 with the latest FBX SDK.

The other problem is that all my development Macs use newer versions of OS X. So that testing SL compatibility is becoming more and more complicated for me. Maintaining compatibility with 5 OS X versions (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite) slowly becomes a true pain.

Last but not least I would be interested in using more of the newer features of OS X. But frameworks like the AVFoundation which offer .h264 hardware encoding simply don't exist on SL.

I also really liked Snow Leopard but it's becoming very difficult to support it any longer.

P.S. v7 will definitely require a 64bit Intel Mac.

It's too early to announce the full feature set of v7. But I'm very sure it contains something usefull for everybody.

Personally I'm in favor of dropping SL support. Any Mac that can run SL can any more recent OS release (Apple's been surprisingly good that way). I think the 64-bit requirement will actually be more of an issue than, say, requiring ML or Mavericks.

Since Lion already required a 64-bit Mac that's no real problem. Lion or Mountain Lion users have 64-bit CPUs anyway.

Thanks Martin.

Well,it certainly sounds as though the end is close for Snow Leopard.

Thanks

Snow Leopard Rocks - Very stable - great for older hardware

Thanks for the updates.
So it sounds like Version 7 will require Lion or above? OSX 10.7+

I'll have to check what the newest OSX is compatible with and hopefully my older programs will work on it too.

I wonder what new features Martin is working on in version 7 Cheetah?

I don't know. I know what my wish list is, and I'm sure some of what I'm looking for will emerge.

I hope we can get some sneak peeks as you go through the updates! It would interesting to see what you are working on.

Version 7 will try to detect your mood on startup and procedurally generate new features based on a best-guess algorithm. Some days you'll start it up to find it can create entire planets and ecosystems in a few clicks. When you're in a procrastinating mood, it might morph into a game creation system. And when you're tired at the end of a hard work day, the interface will usually look similar to Bryce.
