adding texture to parts of object

adding texture to parts of object

Hi everybody,
I'm new here and starting with 3D. I looked at several programs for a long time, but Cheetah is really my stuff and will be my next big challenge.

As a photographer, I want to create futuristic/surrealistic environments, in which i place photographed people. I master photoshop pretty good, but want to create more photorealistic places and surroundings. Untill now, a did some (matte) paintings... To give you an idea what i want to do with 3d is an exemple of a picture I created completely in photoshop: http://photoshopcooking.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/bloody-mary-wp.jpg
(everything is created in photoshop: airplane, city, walls, floor... except the people and bed).

So, i thought creating rooms, buildings, etc. in sketchup pro (adding no colours and texturing), export as 3ds, import in cheetah, adding textures, tweak in photoshop.

When i import the object in cheetah, there is only 1 big object (on 1 layer) with mixed up polygons .

So, my question (finally ):
how can i put several kind of textures, colours, details... to parts of the imported object? What is your advice in workflow to create the effects i want as in the example above?
thx,
Yorky

Hi and welcome.
I would recommend to use the fbx file format for migration from SketchUp to Cheetah3d. There are a few well experienced SU-user around this forum; so there´re a bunch of useful threads&tips around which can easily be found by the search function of the forum software. Here´s a start:
http://www.cheetah3d.de/forum/showthread.php?t=2954

http://www.cheetah3d.de/forum/showthread.php?t=2920

http://www.cheetah3d.de/forum/showthread.php?t=1922

To assign up to 16 different textures to one mesh object, generate a material, select the required polygons and drag the texture from the material browser onto the selection.

With kindest regards
Frank

Hi,
You can add colors and textures in Sketchup if you feel like it or if it's easier for you. In any case, as Frank indicated, they would export nicely with the .FBX format

Thx, but the tests i did weren't satisfying, maybe it's because of my low experience (have just ordered manual). I was reading that the textures of SU were of low quality. I have a bunch of others textures of my own to play with. Maybe someone can convince me to do it in SU, but the renderings in cheetah have to be photorealistic...

I like your work, cool and spooky. 3d should work quite well for that.

Thank you very much! The next months i'll try to make stuff like this with 3d... (hope so )

My suggestion is to skip the textures in SU and use high quality textures, bump maps etc. in Cheetah and do it all there. Just build your model in SU.
