If possible could someone explain the controls in the Optimize Tool? There isn't much about it in the help files. Another question is there a way to constrain the scalpel tool so it cuts a straight line? Thanks I did a search but still a bit unclear about the Optimize Tool.

I think if "Weld Close Vertices" is checked, then that field contains the value that determines what "close" means. Make it larger to have verts that are further apart be welded.

If you want to merge meshes it is very useful. See image.

For a straight cut you can try the jigsaw instead. A neat trick is to use the point slide feature: move the point to another point and release - now pick the point again and move it to where the status bar tells you 0.50.
