Water, Ripples, Waves (Catch up)

Water, Ripples, Waves (Catch up)

Greetings Esteemed Cheetah3D experts.

Today I have been trying to get a realistic water surface working.

Through this forum I've found ripples+.js and a technique using Morphs.

The ripple JS script is from 2006 and several of the threads that discuss it point to threads that are long gone.

I've got the ripple stuff working, but it has many weird behaviours, for example ripples do not start on their own, but will start if you index the 'time' parameter.

Oddness continues, it does not matter if you go forward or backwards on the time link, but in either direction the waves increase. So the technique is to wiggle the cursor up and down the time line until you have sufficiently interesting waves.

I looked on Tres Grafico, I couldn't find ripples but I guess it has moved on somewhere and is called something new.

In any case I thought it would be useful to have a new thread to collect the current state of liquid dynamics and animation.

Helpfully pointers gratefully received!

 Hi AndyThiortover

Did you mean Ripples as in attached image "Ripples 1" or "Ripples 2" ?

The current state of liquid dynamics is C3D doesn't do them ;-)

I think some people have worked on bringing fluid simulations from Blender into C3C for rendering.

As for the ripple script — no clue. It could easily just be a bug.

Both kinds of ripples would be pretty easy to implement as a modifier script.

Pat88 !

Pat88 has been doing exactly what I want to achieve, right down to the water mill.

I wonder why I didn't find that thread!

Cheers

:) Hi Uncle Bob!

I was just trying to determine what Andy was after.
If he chose #1 I was going to refer him to Pat88'sa thread on Water Works as Zoohead did.
If he chose #2 I was going to suggest that it probably could be done but I myself haven't tried.

Stay tuned though:
I began to think about it and spent a couple of days trying to work it out.
I think I came up with a good start but went on to something else before I finished it.

I'll continue working on it this evening (it's 4:30 PM here in the Midwest) and post what I have accomplished by the end of this evening. It will probably be pretty basic and somewhat dirty but maybe someone could polish it up.
I can see it can be done.

This is the best I could come up with. It is just the basic idea.

As you can see I didn't bother with lighting.

I don't know how to make the circle of ripples dissipate into a larger
body of water.

I posted a video of my attempt on YouTube & attached my .jas file.

Hope someone else can better help you.

@ Jeanny: Thank you for your time and effort. Here's what I finished with: and what I needed it for.

Does it needs to be animated? If not a spline in a Lathe-creator will do:

PS: ah - too late. You can do this with the isosurface-creator for a still.

Hi Frank... Can you elaborate on that with some examples, maybe GIFs,
to show us dweebs how it's done??

Thank you for your expertise Frank!

Pretty clever Uncle808us!
I always like your style.
Anything else would ruin the mood you create.

For realism Frank You've got it!

Hey guys, I recently posted my first video tutorial on youtube couple weeks ago and it happens to be somewhat related to this topic of trying to create ripples/water. I'm probably not the first to discover this little trick but I do believe I am the first to put it in a video. Let me know what you think of the video!:D

That first video is really cool! If I had know before making my video I would have given you some credit for sure, because your render looks a lot better then mine.. I'm still gonna put a link in the description of my video leading to your vimeo video!

Nice stuff 'BTB'...thanks for the toot...! :D

I will have to give a whirl!

:D Thanks for the tut BrockTheBoss!

For people who never tried making moving water it's a great help.
For people who are familiar with it, new tuts are always a good reminder
and many times contain different ways of achieving the same results
that may be more suited for some people.

Looking forward to more tuts from you.

BTW Who do you classify as the crazy ones?
