Knurl tutorial?

I'm trying to model an Xacto knife, and am having problems doing the knurled grip part. I got as far as making a cylinder with a section height of, say, 10, then making it editable. However, now I'm not sure how to extrude each face. Some combination of an extrude with a linear bevel, or maybe a Normal Move, perhaps?
 
I would think that this is a perfect place to use a bump map, instead of adding a ton of unnecessary geometry. If you actually want the geometry, then what about a displacement modifier?
