Is this possible?

Is this possible?

I am a bit nervous posting this as I have no idea about the possibilities of the program let alone how to use it. I paint and draw and I have a need to convert a 2D drawing into a 3D image so I can see my characters from various angles - above, behind etc. Is the right program to use or would it be better to get someone else to do it for me?

The characters (at the moment) would be just 2D for printing on to various surfaces albeit from different angles.

Any help/advice would be appreciated as this looks like a huge learning curve and may not even do the job I need.

Hi Jan and Welcome!

I do think Cheetah3d is the right app for what you have in mind - but "converting" 2d to 3d isn´t a simple task except you´re putting a sticker (your drawing) on a plane - but it won´t have any depth. What one is normally doing is use the orthographic drawings as a blueprint and model with this in mind like described here: http://www.cheetah3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4434
This is quite a bite for a beginner. Maybe post a drawing and we can share some more insights.

Cheers

Yep, welcome to the forums!

You can check out this book by John Picha, it may help you get started. I think C3d is perfectly capable to do what you want.
I think this book may be on iBooks too.

Here is the iBooks link (you can also find it on Lulu press too I think):

His YouTube Channel showing different Hanna Barbera cartoons in 3d:

Like most things, just keep practicing and you'll get better at it. And most importantly have fun!

Thanks

Nice comments guys thank you very much. I will look at the books & tutorials you suggest and get ready for a steep learning curve to begin.

Good tips above.

Yes, best to think of taking your drawings and making a sculpture out of them and the work that would require. Only a little easier and less messy on a computer.
