Adding a cylinder to existing object and make it smooth

Adding a cylinder to existing object and make it smooth

Hello,

New to Cheetah3d use to use Cinema4d but want to get back at it.

Was wondering if I can be pointed in the right direction to learn how to do the following.

I have an object that is smooth, I want to add a cylinder and have it melt in with the existing object so it looks like it was part of the mesh.

Notice that the mask has smooth edges and the new cylinder is sharp. Is there away to give the new cylinder that smooth edges and make it part of the mask?

Hi Artofacks1 and welcome to the forums.

Are you trying to add more geometry to the face mask? It could depend on how the mesh is constructed if you want do that. If you could show a isoline view of the mesh or maybe attach the file, one of us may be able help a little more.

Good Day, Rob

* Filleting welded connections is quite complex in 3D modelling.
* If you need to achieve professional details you will need to:

1 Generate a spline which follows the line of intersection between the newly added vertical bar and the existing horizontal loops of the face-protecting mask. This is the blue line in my example.
2 Use this as an axis of a twisted torus.
3 The cross-section of the torus has to be a curved star-shaped spline or, at least, a 1/4 circle.
4 You will need to rotate and fiddle parameters to get a clean result.
* Needless to say, not a trivial exercise :frown:

PS: For simple flat surfaces the Bevel tool /in concave mode) is useful, but the topology in this case is too complex.

Here's a gif that shows two cylinders merged in the way
you're looking for. I show it with subdivision on and off.

The horizontal cylinder has 8 sections and the other has 10 to
more closely match each other in this particular relationship.
Then I used a Subdivision Modifier set to 3 Catmull-Clark.

It will always help if you can upload the file, just zip/compress it first.

Here's a boiled down tutorial which should illustrate
the way I should have done it in the first place.

After enough analysis, aka tediously hacking together solutions,
I was able to distill the operation to a fairly simple procedure.

The cool thing about Zoohead and MIA Frank as well as others.. is they model. what I mean by this is they push the verts about to achieve the end result. After all it is called modeling. Thanks for all the tuts Zoo. Modeling is fun.:icon_thumbup:  PS come home Frank your dinner is getting cold err moldy.

Thanks Unc, sometimes we expect the programmers to do
the work so we can just hit a button and meet a deadline.

What about your "Splicing The Tubes Intro" videos Zoo?

Frank Bechmann had some tube tuts also.

Bless You
Jeanny

Thanks posting those links Jeanny, they work well together.
This offset join is a new one, so it took me a while to get it.

I fear the model in question, in the posting by artofacks1,
was already a high poly mesh so this may not be very helpful.

Just playing with this one a bit more.

This is a mostly finished Shutt Super Pro ropo-ub-dw football facemask.

I'm not sure what all that means except for ropo
which stands for reinforced oral protection only.

I started with splines for each wire section, then I used them
in a Sweep Modifier with a six sided disc as the profile spline.

The six sided disc was a mistake but not a fatal one. I should have used
an eight sided disc to make it easier when setting up the objects for
the Bridge Tool. Removing four polygons reveals eight vertex points.
So I had to remove two, which gave me the six I needed.

Then for the main curves I added a Bend Modifier to the sweep
and made the secondary bends with the splines themselves.

After making the parts editable and merging them into
one object, I used the Bridge Tool to join them together.

Originally I only had a picture from the front so I had no real
idea how it was shaped in back. More work is needed to finish.

Thanks Swizl, I had a chance to finish this morning.

I've got some great tips and tricks to share
so I'll be making some new tutorials soon.

Great, I'm sure it will be done really well per your usual tutorials. I've never come across having to do these offset welds before. Nice puzzle to solve. :)

One might consider to do it completely as Metaballs (Splines+Isosurface-
creator+symmetry-modifier):
