Create dice.

Dice

I am trying to use a transparent PNG letter Z.

In the attached image I have added the letter.
Turned off tiling.
Set the position.

Things I don't understand.

1. The Z is reversed.
2. The whole polygon is transparent.

I am trying to produce the dice so that in IClone I can change the box colour (eg yellow to blue).

Is this possible ?

Cheers

I don´t think so. In Cheetah3d there´s a composite node which lets you mix PNG images with diffuse color. Is there something like that in iClone?
I guess the best thing you can do is to unwrap each side (just selections from UV-mapper cubic unwrap) place it on the template and "paint/draw" your way.

How do 'unwrap each side'

In my example when I goto UV Editor I see a different layout than you.

I exported the PDF created a new layer and added a yellow back ground and some 'Z's and used this jpeg as the image.

I get the second image.

What am I missing here ?

Set the UV-mapper toll to perfectly fit (Box needs to be inside orange cage) - then click "UV unwrap".
In 3d view select 1 center polygon and expand selection till half of the edge rounding - in UV-editor move selection aside the template - repeat till all 6 sides are separate islands - select now all polygons and scale them to fit the UV-template again - but now side-by-side:
Save to PDF: load in Vector- or image app - paint - export square image load as texture to diffuse channel - assign to dice.

Dice

Nearly there,

I found this basic example here :
http://www.cheetah3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2279

I started with a std cube and produce the PDF (3dBox3.pdf) and created the green jpg3dBox3.jpg) with the numbers on. The render is 3dBoxRender.png.

All looks okay and I'm on a roll.

I then tried the same with the sample provided earlier (all in archive3.zip).

But the result is wrong.

Can anyone regain my sanity.........

PS what the difference between the 2 Unwraps (or which should I use)

Cheers

May lay aside UV seams for a moment - as you don´t need it here.
All you have to do is to select all polygons belonging to one of the 6 sides - and tell unwrap UVs Rotate it if necessary and move it outside the template - repeat for 5 other sides - now group-select all other islands one-by-one and place them to your liking - at the end scale all down till it fits the template - save to PDF, paint, save image ...etc pp.
