spline modelling advice

spline modelling advice

Hi Everyone,

Im now about to start modelling a 4WD, and I am open to advice. I would kind of like to make this using splines, but due to time constraints will probably box model. If a spline based solution appears I may switch to that style.

Any advice on that folks?
Thanks
AC

Hi AC,

here is a link to an Audi A8 modlling workshop. It is done in and for C4D but I think some parts you can use also for C3D. This is the most complete workshop for car modelling is ever saw - and as you know, in case of issues - ask! :)

http://www.lacreme.de/index.php?sektion=uebersicht (Aaah forgot ... sorry is in german)

Or perhaps here you could find some tipps: http://www.carbodydesign.com/tutorials/car-3d-modeling-tutorials.php?pageNum_RsResources=0

And I recommend to take a look an this side for PbP: http://www.colacola.se/

Hope this helps a bit.

Best regards

Hi Aaron.
I won´t say it´s impossible using splines for that purpose. At least with the fine loft script Todd wrote a spline patched approach can be managed; see attached pic.
I think a PbP ( Poly-by-Poly) modelling will give the greatest control over the mesh. BTW: the tutorial Wal mentioned in his reply is an outstanding detailed example.

With kindest regards
Frank

Thanks guys, Polygons it is. Which tutorial exactly? I found a muscle car and fiat WIP gallery, -did you mean the German one?

I have tried both the box method and the spline method (the spline method is not usable in C3D imo), but finally settled for the polygon by polygon method. As Frank says, it gives the most control–i.e. you get closer to a custom made subdivision at the end of it. However, recently I am finding that a mixed method of poly-to-poly with Cover/Extrude and other C3D tools works best for me.
