Cheetah3D 5.x for Beginners - Video tutorials

Hi Waldo,
How new are you, anyway?
Only to Cheetah3D or to 3D in common?
Read you're Dutch speaking - as I am too.
For me, Cheetah3D is my first serious step into 3D.
I tried 3DMax a while ago, but time and a slow PC at the time forced me to give up on it.
Now with playing around in Cheetah3D for a week or so, watching tutorials and LEARN A LOT from the FORUMPOSTS I am really exited about all the opportunities, also in my work as a professional graphic designer.
Feel free to contact me be e-mail too.
All teh best, gr., Miguel

Hi Miguel,

no, I'm not new in 3D, I work with Strata3D, 3DCoat, Silo
But all these apps have there strengths and weaknesses.
My main goal is to animate in Cheetah. But I'm learning the app all the way, since I like it already . (Well done Martin!)

Waldo

Hi Martin,

do you have a table of contents of the trainings-DVDs somewhere?
I think this should be a must.

Thanks
Wolfgang

Problems with Cheetah3D 5.x for Beginners - Video tutorials

It's nice to have tutorials matching the current version of Cheetah! The content seems fine, but there are some production and delivery issues:

1- the audio level is way too low. I must max out the volume on quicktime player and max the volume on my Mac, and I still can barely hear the commentary over the ambient noise in my office. Impossible to listen to any music while working through the many hours of tutorials! Please fix this!

2- the html interface doesn't work with Firefox or Chrome. I did turn off popup blockers. In Firefox the video plays in a quicktime viewer about the size of a thumbnail, no way to resize. In Chrome, there is a blank white popup, and the quicktime audio is playing, but no video seen. However if I just drag the .mov file into a Chrome window, it plays fine. So it seems the html isn't coded to be very cross browser friendly.

It would be appreciated if you can re-release the Cheetah3D 5.x for Beginners - Video tutorials with these issues fixed.

OS X 10.6.4
Chrome 5.0
Firefox 3.6.6

edit:
OK got my music working; however must wear earbuds, and set my itunes volume nearly at zero, and all other volumes at Maximum.

Hi,
I and Andrew are working on these problems. I hope that I can upload improved tutorials soon. I will inform you once the updated tutorials are uploaded.

Bye,

I'm a little confused, if you open the disc image, then go into the resources folder, you should be able to drag all the videos to your desktop and watch them independently and not through a browser. Better that you have an actual copy of them anyway.

@Martin- OK that's great to hear!

@Erin- you are right, I can just watch the .movs individually in Quicktime player. I can also use the html navigation with Safari instead of Chrome or Firefox, and that works fine. Really this is a minor issue compared with the sound levels in the audio.

I have spent the weekend working through all the video tutorials of Cheetah3D 5.x for Beginners, and feel really disappointed.

First of all, most of the resource for tutorial are not well prepared. They look either ugly or not like something we will ever create for our work. You have to be very experienced in 3D software to be able to understand why we should use the tool that made that ugly mesh.

Second, most of the training materials are just walking through all the tools in Cheetah3D, too few of them are explained with example. I'm wondering why should I pay 29 dollars just to hear some description of the tools in a software? Those basic description should be IMPLEMENTED IN HELP already! Instead, most of the time you can only get the location of a certain tool in the software, without any explanation. Although for a lot of cases, it is more than enough to just leave an one-sentence description there.

Third, I have watched a lot of video tutorials for different kinds of software. If it's some free tutorials on youtube, it really doesn't matter how systematic or fluent in language. But speak of priced video tutorial, it demands not only clear expression, no or very few error in recording, but also funny language and very effective operation. You should teach users to achieve a goal with the most effective method, but not showing yourself trying something out in your software somehow.

Conclusion: the video tutorial looks like made in a single take, without a well designed run-down or necessary drills. (for example there's a few duplicated tool explanation.)

And to be honest, the author really should spend the time to improve help menu instead of making crappy video tutorials for quick money.

Sorry for speaking harshly. I'm a Cheetah3D beginner and already fell in love with the package. It's a great software for the value but the video tutorial is absolutely another story.

Wow, others might feel different, but I don't think I will be picking up the tutorials because of this post.

I hope that gets resolved.

You'd be making a mistake in my opinion. They are the best resources on Cheetah3D that are available, I wouldn't let one negative comment put you off - have a look at all the positive ones!

Video Tutorial

Well, I know the tutorials for version 4.x and not the new one for 5.x. In my opinion the tutorial is very good and very recommendable.

Hello, was wondering if the audio has been fixed, would be great to have an update in regards.

Thanks and keep up the great work.:icon_thumbup:

Hi,
it has been fixed some months ago. The download link you got works for three downloads so if you want you can redownload them.

Bye
Martin

Thanks Martin, good to know. Great effort you've put into it guys, much appreciated. Have a good old one and a new year's one.

Cheers

I thought to leave my feedback about the Cheetah 3D version 5.x for beginners as I was put off from purchasing from a comment on this thread.

The videos are well structured for a beginners learner and they do cover in details for the non so beginners as well.
Andrew explanation is easy to understand and easy to follow through, the video and audio quality is very good and there are no background noises.
You can access the tutorial via a web browser or just launching the single videos in quicktime.

The content of the videos has been expanded from previous version covering more topics and up to date with version 5 release.
These are the sections included: Introduction, Getting Started, Parametric Objects & Splines, Creator Objects, Modifier Objects, Scene Objects, Tag Objects, Modelling, Texturing, Rendering, Animation as well as resources files.

I found the videos highly recommendable to everyone new and non so new to Cheetah 3D. If you have bought a license get the videos as well. You'll be up and running in no time and will have a more enjoyable experience using the full potential of the program therefore creating a more satisfactory results of your work.

I thank you Martin and Andrew for making this resources available at a very reasonable price tag and look forward to see Cheetah3D evolve further.

Tutorial Particles and Effectors

Last week I purchased the training videos along with Cheetah 5.6. It seemed like everything in the menu bar was covered in the tutorials except for Particles and Effectors. Did I miss this section or are they not in the series? Great software and user interface for 3D newbies, thanks!

Hi Yosh,
Sorry Particles and effectors didn't make it into the current version. I did a VERY quick video (see the links, below, in my signature) which looked at particles amongst some of the features that have been introduced since 5 was released. I'm no expert in particles but if I can help, I will.
