Slow camera zooming, rotating etc

Hi,
I'm pretty sure that I saw a post on this but was unable to find it:
I have a simple model of a couch on the go and all of a sudden zooming and rotating the view is very slow.:(
Anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi Erin
I can't remember why this would happen (maybe a scale problem?) but you can try to select one object and point the camera to it with the Focus Camera button (upper right in 3d view)

@ Alain - thanks Alain, I checked out that thread, but it's not an animation issue that I'm having, it's just in the modelling view.

Here's a how to I created for myself, as I had the same issue at first, trying to animate the camera through a scene, "fly through". When I got near a certain point in the scene, the camera slowed to a crippling crawl. This resolved it without having to constantly reset click onto another object each time it crawls.

CAMERA ANIMATION SOLUTION: NO ZOOM SLOW DOWN WHILE ZOOMING CAMERA VIEW
In regards to the debilitating CAMERA VIEW SLOWDOWN that occurs as the camera nears the center pivot of the most recent object it was on, It's a solution with a catch, but you CAN freely animate the camera without ANY slowdown throughout your scene provided the following is done:
1. Set your scene up as normal, with objects, buildings, etc.
2. Far outside the immediate range of your scene, set up a simple plane object, and call it "ZOOMPLANE", which will be your pivot point.
3. Next, click on the "Zoomplane" icon and press the camera ZOOM to zoom to it.
4. Now, with your back directly to your scene, start zooming away backwards from the ZOOMPLANE, keeping lined up with the scene so you don't go off track. At first it's slow, but once you finally reach your scene, you'll have total freedom without any slowdown.
5. Now select the camera ICON you wish to animate. Then begin animating the camera, but under NO circumstances, should you deselect the camera while animating. If you click on another object to animate it, the camera's most recent object PIVOT will be set to the new object, and you'll lose the freedom of movement without slowdown, forcing you to start step one if you wish to continue animating the camera freely.
 
Thanks for the how to Darth, but I'm not animating anything, just modeling. I ran into the problem when I tried t zoom in close on one of the objects.
I will flag your post for future reference for when I get into doing animated walkthroughs etc. A long ways away for me though, I'm afraid :frown:

Not sure if scale plays a role, but if you're object's zoom is getting extremely slow without even being 'too close' to it, maybe it need to be reduced in size. If it's too big, maybe the center pivot zoom point is becoming an issue. Just a theory.

EDIT: Actually, this doesn't work. The suggestions above, where you click on a polygon and then zoom to that work well.

I wish there was an option added that says: Camera slow down: On/Off?

In general, C3D's camera controls misbehave when you're zoomed in very close or very far out. It's a long standing issue (over and above depth culling issues which all 3d programs have), and I'm surprised it hasn't been addressed.
 
Yep.. Today I was zooming and rotating and zooming etc.:) And all of a sudden it's impossible to zoom. So I have to restart Cheetah and re-open the file then it works OK. Happens pretty often too.
 
What field of view are you using? I usually find a value of 30 to be fairly realistic. Sometimes changing the field of view frees up the movement a bit. Another workaround I sometimes use is to control the camera in perspective mode, from a second window, while viewing in the first window. I sympathize with what you are experiencing.

No, no, no. When it starts to slow down - just stop scrolling any longer. (I become aware of that behaviour intermittently in every 3d app I use and even 2d; try to zoom in via scroll wheel in Intaglio to 20.000% - does'nt make any sense :lol: ) I´d never restart Cheetah3d.
Just select a mesh or component and hit "target camera" - I highly recommend to put it on a hotkey. It has the great advantage that your view is now rotating around your selection. And I´d never use the "camera view" while I´m at modelling - never. It's as simple as that.

But perspective view distorts the image so much at close range, I find it impossible not to use the camera. Do you use the 4-way view when you model?

*edit*- I went and checked out the perspective view and it doesn't seem as bad as I remember it. I seem to remember using it and getting views similar to the bottom frame, (which is a camera set @ 80 to simulate what I remember it doing)

I was just modeling earlier today and noticed (for the first time) such extreme distortion in perspective view. My camera did not change (field of view default 60).

I dismissed this as an anomaly - I was using some loft and spline scripts a lot and my splines might have been rather small - so I just figured the distortion may have been caused by that.
