Sew UVs?

Sew UVs?

I can't find info on this anywhere. How do I sew 2 UV edges together? The UV operations seem to be rather limited, but there must be a way to sew UVs.

ok, I am totally confused by the strange way UVs are handled in Cheetah. Every face is it's own UV island regardless how the model is unwrapped. There are no real UV seams. I can select a face from within an island and move it, and it is not connected to it's neighbors. It just comes right of the cluster. That is the weirdest thing I have seen, and I just can't adjust. WTF? Seriously, what the hell is that about?

sorry if I'm coming off as rude, but I can't fathom how this could be considered a feature. I can mark my seams, and unwrap my model, but in the UV editor, these seams don't exist. Every poly is a free-floating island. I'm trying to make sense of why someone would implement UVs in this way... am I missing something? I've used a lot of modelers, and if I came across this in any other package I would consider it to be a major bug.

in this case you'd want to move the points rather than the face. I actually prefer this current setup, you can quickly select a bunch of faces and rightclick, unwrap UV and and its done.

I'll agree that doing a quick pelt unwrap on a selection of faces is great. In Silo, if you want to pelt a section of polys that run over a marked seam, you must click 2 buttons: UVs XYZ, and then UVs Unwrapped.... but, and a big but, you can tweak the UVs in the UV editor using edge, face, or point selection modes, and UV islands behave the way they do in every other editor.

Do this: select a single point on the middle of an island in the C3D UV editor, then grow selection once, and then rotate the selection. The selection breaks from the island, because nothing is sewn. I have never seen another UV editor that has no concept of UV seams like this.

Yeah, well, I guess _I'm_ missing the point. I'm just used to proper islands that don't crumble. Being able to model in the UV editor just like I do in the 3D viewport in Silo has spoiled me I guess. I wish I could toggle off this default behavior in C3D.

UV editing in Cheetah3D may not be as powerful as in other applications. For instance, stitching is missing from the picture and it's hard to align things precisely. However, WTFing your way through this thread is not going to help you solve whatever issues you may have. I am sure that if you ask questions about specific problems someone will be more than willing to help.

Stick it on the wishlist Adam.

Sorry guys, if slang is too offensive, or childish for the cheetah forums. I was hoping I could Texture and UV my Silo models in Cheetah, since it has a better material system than Silo (alpha channels display correctly, supports PSD), but I got to using Cheetah's UV editor, and now I'm totally let down. I want to replace Silo with Cheetah completely, because I'm getting tired of juggling assets between 2 modelers. After evaluating both modeling, and UV mapping in Cheetah, it looks like I'll be heading back to Silo for both these tasks. When I say WTF, it's out of true frustration, because I was really getting into C3D, but the UV editor is a total deal-breaker.

The more logical side of me is saying forget all this nonsense and go back to Maya.

For what I've seen of your work and what you have written on this forum you are obviously passionate and committed. C3D is a great tool and it's being developed continually by a developer who has the same level of passion and commitment as yourself. If you can workaround this glitch I'm sure the issue will be resolved quickly.

Yeah, I think I'm prolly too passionate. The tech lead at my day job must hate me. I think the real problem is just how good Silo is. Modo, Maya, Max... they're all clunky and slow compared to Silo. It's the closest thing to sketching in 3D that I've seen. You build it as fast as you can think it. But Silo, as a package is so limited. If Cheetah could model and UV map like Silo can, on top of it's great renderer and rigging, and upcoming new material system, I would gladly pay triple for it. I've heard C3D described as Cinema4D Lite. Well, I gave Cinema4D a whirl, and I hated it. The experience does not match the price tag. Cheetah is a much better app IMO. If it were bundled with Unity, I would have thought it was from the same developer... and that's a compliment. I want to love this app, really, but right now it's mostly my FBX ripper for .SIA files (with a few related bugs).

I still look forward to v.5, and my ultimate hope is a pipeline that is just Cheetah->Unity. In the mean time, I think a check-box in the FBX export options for imbedding smart folder contents would tide me over.

Passion is OK providing that there is some control over it ... !
You obviously have experiences with other packages and that can be very useful to the C3D community.
But it takes time to build a good tool. I've been on board since version 0.9 if I recall correctly and if Cheetah3D is what it is today, it's also because Martin is listening to what we, as a group of users, are or have been saying. Your voice can be heard if you take the time to correctly express and/or justify your needs. I guarantee you that Martin is listening even if he is not posting on a specific thread.
On the other hand, please keep in mind that C3D can't be geared to fill a unique need (eg : C3D => Unity )
