FBX IMport Loses Texture Maps

Hmmm...

Following on from my SU import thread: I can't get textures to import using FBX.

The "Export Textures" is checked in SU...can't see anything in Import Preferences in Cheetah...

The exported textures are where they should be (in a folder with the same name as model)...

You can see here the tile texture on the wall in SU...when it comes into Cheetah -- no textures.

Tim,

Hmmm ....
Are you running 4.3.1b2 ?
Is this on importing into a new empty C3D file ?
Is the "use existing materials" checked in the .fbx preferences ?
Was a new material created in C3D after importing ? If yes, check the "UV scale"
FWIW, I regularly use the .fbx import function and I believe this is working correctly. Peer can certainly confirm this too.

Oups ... I forgot ...
I already told Martin sometime ago about this and I believe this will be fixed (if not already) in the new coming version.
Rather than importing your SU/.fbx file into C3D, double-click on the .fbx file and you will get your textures.

Err...errr..errr....no, yes, yes, no...

This was 4.1, then I checked it in 4.3 (not4.3.1b2) and got the same result.

But then I tried your suggestion of dbl-clicking on the FBX, and the textures came in fine. Thanks for the tip, but still Odd.

Now what if I want to use a Smart Folder....?

Edit: If I import it into a Smart Folder, I get textures, too...

peer -- do you mean 'works' as in double-clicking works to bring in the textures, or that the FBX import works as it should?

(4.3.1 shows the same no-texture import problem, as well):frown:

Hi Tim,
Francois reported that bug some time ago and I've already fixed it for Cheetah3D 4.3.2. So it will work in the next update.

Sorry for the problems.

Bye,
Martin

Hi Tim,

I just exported the fbx from SU with textures. In Cheetah I create a smartfolder and point to the fbx file. This imports the model and textures correctly. If I then add something to the Sketchup model ie. textures or change some geometry and export it again (overwrite current fbx file), the changes are also made in Cheetah. So I guess it works here. If you want I can send you an example model?

@ Martin, Thanks for the kind words about my avatar, when I get back home I'll post a larger version. Yes it was done with Hiroto's script. I wanted to test it and I thought I might try to model myself, well at least the hair color is good ;-) PS. The update function in Cheetah 4.3.1 didn't work?

Regards,

Peter

edit: OK the 4.4 update solved it. edit #2: Yesterdays check was indeed without textures (stupid of me!)

Peter --

That's what I did...but direct import doesn't work. However....
