Cheap Alternative to Final Cut Express...

All I want to do for video editing, is merge together clips, add a logo overlay, and out put at a non-DV resolution. Not much to ask.

Tried doing that with iMovie? Hah! Painful. Looked like FCE ($350) was the only alternative.

Anyway, I've come across this new app called Norrkross Movie. Brand new (Version 1.0.2), UB, Core Image to the core, very nicely designed, extremely intuitive. I just seems to work the way that I've always thought that Video Edirors should work. And it's only $79. A few rough edges, but nothing to cry about.

And interestingly, it's the work of a solitary developer (this time Swedish) by the name of Martin Wen......nerberg.

Check it out here: http://www.norrkross.com/software/movie/

Hi,
that apps looks very promising. I'm looking for such a app since quite some time. And it is just 59$ as introductory price.

That the developers name sounds quite simliar to mine makes it even better.

Bye,
Martin

Perfect timing! I have a small video project to get done this week and at present I don't have the software to do it - this could be very useful - thanks Tim.

It does look very interesting. iMovie is great for DV but as I've also found recently, not good for other resolutions. Thanks for posting.

Hi Tim, first impressions are very good. Nice little app, really useful thanks for that Tim.

Hi, this is the other Martin W speaking, -the developer of Norrkross Movie.

Thanks for mentioning my app. Please note that the free demo is only limited by watermarking the exports so anybody interested should be able to get a good idea of the app.

I don't do any 3D work currently so I haven't purchased a Cheetah license yet, but it's obviously an awesome app!

Norrkross Movie is far from being as mature as Cheetah3D and I have lot's of things to do for the next few versions. But I think that some kind of integration would add great value to both apps and will investigate how this might be done.

Martin --

Welcome to the Forum!

As far as integration goes -- you took the words right out of my mouth! I think the Combination of C3D & NM could be a giant-killer.

Hi Martin,
welcome to the forum. It's nice to see you here.

I've already did some small tests. For example I rendered a rotating 3D logo with transparent background. And then I easily composited it into the corner of another movie using Norrkross Movie. Very nice.

Just one small question. Is is already possible to loop a clip endlessly?

I don't do any 3D work currently so I haven't purchased a Cheetah license yet, but it's obviously an awesome app!

If you are interested we can exchange some keys for free.

Oh, thanks. I will follow the development of Norrkross Movie closely.

Sure. I think many people doing animations might have some interest to composite it into real world movies. Or to combine various small animations clips to a longer movie.

Bye,
Martin

Looping clips is currently not possible, but it soon will be. Generally, the editing capabilities are rather limited in version 1.0, but hopefully enough to be useful. Looping, reversing, slow motion are all left for a future version and the gui for editing will be improved as well.

I'd be happy to exchange keys, Martin. Please email me at martin@norrkross.com and I'll send you a key.

And I think many wants to add 3d content to their movies so I'd be happy to recommend Cheetah3D as a tested solution.

Hey, if yall could get together with a few other Martin's and make something like iLife, or adobe, Buy this package and receive cheetah3d, Norkross movie, Norkross morphx, etc…

U&I's V-track will do this for you.
You get 8 tracks to mix quicktime movies, pictures, and text that you create. It also works in conjunction with their Artmatic software, and it also mixes artmatic 'systems'. The output resolutions and codecs are fairly comprehensive. If your just mixing quicktime movies, it works fast, but it's not as inexpensive as the norrkros app.

And here's a dedicated artmatic/voyager website from a great artist;

Sorry to drag this post up from the long-distant past, but if anyone is interested in Norrkross Movie, there is a special MacSanta 20% off price today, Dec 5 (and likely 10% off in the day(s) after.

Check out www.macsantadeals.com

For simple compositing (especially stuff like adding watermarks, or simply compositing a transparent video over a background video or still) I'd recommend QuickTime Pro ($30 from Apple).

For more advanced stuff, Final Cut Express is good value. (For some reason Apple clearly considers compositing a key differentiator and offers no support at all for any kind of layers in iMovie -- even though they obviously could if they wanted to.)

Hi folks,
for anybody interested the new version of Norkkross Movie (2.0) is on sale at MUpromo this weekend: 50% off the regular price. I've not enough experience to compare it with other similar apps (like the ones Podperson has talked about here and there in the forum) but it's a good deal for sure for 20$

cheers,
A

I bought this a long time ago it's ok but the development is poor. There's been a couple of bug fix releases over several years and then a new version which requires a paid for up date. It is 20 dollars at mupromo but don't expect a Martin C3D level of developer input. Personally, I'd stay with imovies. Norkkross Movies is no final cut express.
