Particlle Visualization of ASCII Data

Hello

here is a samle script. I hope it will help.

it's a Particle Script, so place it into ~/Library/Application Support/Cheetah3D/scripts/Particle folder.

I think you have to edit calculation of conversion Lat/Long/Depth -> X/Y/Z coordinate.

We have big floods here and our house has been cut off - so please pardon long delay in answering your post.

I will recalculate the data in x, y, z, magnitude format and let you know as soon as I have done this. Thank you very much - the image looks amazing. I will extend the sample set so you can see all of the earthquakes beneath Japan for which we have fault plane solutions.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have opened the ".jas" script and that worked OK.

Then I ran the ".s" script but could not see how I attached the data to it.

I guess I will learn eventually - pardon my ignorance.

Modified script and new data

Hi Hiroto

There are floods here and so it is not always possible to respond quickly. My apologies. Thank you for your sample script. It helped me a lot.

New earthquake data are now available for the entire Earth at the following URL <http://tectonics.anu.edu.au/earthquakes/>. This new dataset is 3.6Mb in size.

I have modified your script a little - this was not a very successful modification - since I no longer see the input data. The file is attached.

I guess I have done something odd.

I attached the latest file, I modified some function and edit some paramters. please check it.

I couldn't download dataset file. so I checked old data. :)

That is very helpful - and I begin to see how things work.

Earthquakes for our planet for the last thirty years (more or less) are now on <http://tectonics.anu.edu.au/earthquakes/> as a zip file. These are from the Global Centroid Moment Tensor project. These guys do the hard work of finding out a fault plane and slip direction for each earthquake. One way people represent this data is with beachballs.

Would you be willing to help us out with that?

Would you like to send me your personal details so we can add your name (and photo) to our website as a scientific collaborator?

PS By the way I have not managed to make each particle show the typical 3D appearance as in the material ball. I am sorry to ask so many questions.
