View Full Version : WIP : Spierings crane
So I'm finally starting on my new lunchbreak project.
This time it will be a Spieringscrane you see often here in Holland.
It's a self-erecting foldingcrane. So far I'm working on the truckpart.
Here's a reference picture and my renderings.
Comments are always welcome.
Regards,
Peter
Edit:
So after some time I'm getting back to my lunchbreak project. I will post updates in the this post so you don't have to scroll (or is that easier?). Anyway here's the picture with the jib (spline2poly object) and a picture of the superstructure of the crane. It's a lot more detailed as you can see. I was inspired by someone from the bauforum24.de This Thread (You have to register to see it, I'm sorry:-( ) (http://forum.bauforum24.biz/forum/index.php?showtopic=28165) . I hope to update more frequently now ;-)
Comments always welcome!

Looking really good so far. :icon_thumbup: That steel work is going to be complex - quite a few lunchbreaks! :)
Hi,
Your model looks very well done:icon_thumbup:. The crane arm will be hard to do. You could probably do somthing with splines and the sweep creator.
Good job,
Greg

Peter,
- is this the only picture you are using ?
- how do you do to keep things in scale ?
thanks
Thanks for the nice words already. I'll sure need a lot of lunchbreaks!
@ François,
The picture you see is just for reference. I'm using the blueprint object and some cadimages from different sides of the crane. This way my scale will be OK as well. For the jib (the steelwork), I'm using Hiroto's excellent poly2splinetool (see attachment). This example was done in 5 mins.

Peter

I couldn't think of the word "jib". I knew it had a proper name, but for the life of me I couldn't think of jib! :)
That's a clever use of poly2spline - I wouldn't of thought of that. I must remember it for future work.

Could you explain how the poly2spline tool works?

Hi Peter,
wow that is the crane you talked about. Very nice. I'm sure that will become your next master piece.
Can't expect to see it finished.
Bye,
Martin
P.S. Very clever usage of the "Poly 2 Spline" script.
I have updated my first post. After a long time I'm continuing this lunchbreak project.
CC always welcome.

Cool progress&project.
Thanks for sharing.
With kindest regards
Frank
Love the sky light profile render, nice and sharp. The models coming on well, I'm doing something similar at the moment so it's going to be interesting to see how you proceed. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Peter
Not my 1st choice of car....but a really spectacular piece of detailed modelling
v,v,v lovely

Thanks for all your nice words! Modeling of the superstructure is done in Sketchup because of it's precision. The truck was done in Cheetah. And ofcourse the renderings were also done in Cheetah. I'm maybe thinking of animating the whole thing once it's finished. What are the things I have to think about before I start to model? The superstructure is modeled with the turning axes in mind. This seems to import well in Cheetah (i'll render a short movie today).
Thanks in advance. And a couple of DOF renders to add.

Peter

Awesome work! There are some very talented modelers/renderers using Cheetah! Model on!!!
Hi,
great job on the detail!:icon_thumbup: I've noticed in the last picture in the bottom left corner there seems to be a line of dead pixels.
nice renders.
~Greg
P.S. are you working from a blueprint?
@ Eureka, the dead pixels are from saving the image before it was completely rendered, I just missed the last stripe of pixels.
I do have some simple blueprints (pdf) that I import in Vectorworks in order to measure the overal size. The details come from looking and estemating the sizes from a couple of hundred photos I have here (I visited the factory :-) )
Thanks for a the comments so far. I'll be updating next week probably.
Regards,
Peter
Hi Peter,
very very nice stuff   Great work. The DOF renderings look amazing. :icon_thumbup:
Bye,
Martin
Here's a small update. I'll try to post some nice DOF renders today as well.
The superstructure is almost finished so now I can concentrate on the tower with telescopic parts and then finally the jibsections.
C&C always welcome.
Regards,
Peter
How did this end up looking I wonder?

Hi Targos, the model isn't much further developed because of time issues here. Eventually I hope to pick it up again and your reply might just triggered it. :-)
My lunchbreak is in 4 hours so I'll have a look and see...

Peter
Hi,
Here's a small update, I just modelled the wheels and added the model of the upper structure. I will continue to model it further and will keep you posted!

It looks very nice and clean!
well done
So after some experimenting I've finished the wheels. I'm now busy modeling the truck (during lunchbreaks) and the first jibsections (at home). And yes, I do have a life ;-) so updates won't be that frequent I'm afraid.
C&C always welcome.

Peter
Amazing job! I'm very impressed with your diligence with this project. It's really growing. I have to say that I'm also impressed with the warehouse you created around it.:icon_thumbup:

I agree, great work! As for the warehouse, I bet that is an HDRI... :)
Wow the realism of those wheels is incredible. Goody gumdrops!
AC
Thanks for the comments, yes it's going to be a livetime project I gues ;-)
As for the warehouse, it's indeed a free HDRI. I got them from HDRLab, don't know the site exactly, but maybe try a googlesearch.
I'll keep you posted!

Peter
PS. Posted a small movie not great quality though... Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t_YXJ2nv_c)
